GENERAL
NAMING PROTOCOL FOR THE NAMING OF WAYPOINTS FOR RNA V APPROACH PROCEDURES
1. The intention of this AIC is to inform the aviation community that the CAA has adopted a naming protocol which will be
implemented for all RNA V approach procedures in South Africa.
INTRODUCTION
2. With the Implementation of RNA V non-precision approaches, there is a requirement for suitable instrument approach
charts to be prepared and published. These charts will be identified as RNA V (GNSS) charts. A standard convention
of naming or identifying the waypoints of the procedures is necessary with each waypoint needing to have a unique
name or identifier. ICAO is in the process of establishing guidance material on naming waypoints but at present there
is no standard convention.
3. The following naming protocol has been developed by the CAA and is to be implemented on all RNA V approach
procedures in South Africa:
4. In order to conform to ARINC 424 specifications, which standardises the nature and form of aviation databases, a five
letter or digit or combination of letters and digits is required to identify a particular waypoint name or identifier.
5. It has been decided by the CAA that in South Africa this waypoint name or identifier shall consist of the last two letters
of the airport or aerodrome ICAO location indicator, followed by a digit to indicate the designated runway threshold on
w";,;h the procedure is based. The next letter identifies the type of fix and the name or identifier ''; .ds with a digit to
give a number to the fix.
6. The letter indicating the type of fix for the waypoint will be one of the following:
Examples:
1 designated threshold 1;
T intermediate approach fix (IF);
1 the first intermediate fix in the intermediate segment.
2 designated threshold 2;
N initial approach fix (IAF);
2 second initial approach fix in the initial approach segment.
Waypoint DN2MP ON Durban airport (from FAON);
2 designated threshold 2;
CONCLUSION
