Main menu
After switching on the ESCB, the main menu will be displayed automatically.
In this menu the norm burden array, the current range and the burden step can be selected. Furthermore the
selected burden step can be switched on or off.
Furthermore there is a possibility to select ½, ¼ or 1/8 part of the burden step
The dividing of the burden step can only be performed, if the resulting burden step is present in the burden
step table.

Always confirm numeric inputs and selected functions with the ENTER key.
1 With this function key the operator can change into the menu Burden Settings (see next chapter). After
pressing this function key a new window will be opened.
2 With this function key the operator can change into the menu Burden Calibration (see chapter Burden
Calibration). After pressing this function key a new window will be opened.
3 With this function key the complete burden data setting and the actual device settings will be
transferred into a nonvolatile memory.
Store the value which you have entered for compensation before (see point 6). Otherwise the values will
be deleted when you switch off the ESCB.
4 With this function key the operator can change into the main menu.
5 With this function key the language (German or English, default setting is German) can be selected. After
pressing this function key a pull down menu will appear. The preselected function is marked. The
function can be changed by pressing the control keys ““ and “”. Please confirm your selection with
the ENTER key.
6 With this function key the resistances Ra and Rb can be entered. After pressing this function key the
cursor jumps into the 5-A-field. Enter an external burden value in m for the 5-A-range of the Ra
resistance via numeric keys and confirm your input with the ENTER key. Next the cursor jumps to the
The values for Ra and Rb include the forward and return connector.
Hints for correcting and deleting of entered values:
Use the control key „“ to go back to the beginning of the 5A, 2A and 1A-fields and delete the value by
using the key „C“ of the alphanumeric keypad until the field is empty. Press the key “C” more often if it is
necessary. Now enter your new value and confirm it with the ENTER key.
In the optimal case the sense wires are directly connected to the terminal of the secondary circuit of the device
under test (see picture above). Afterwards the total resistance has to be determined (see chapter Determination
of Resistance Ra) and entered at Ra . Rb equals zero.
If, for any reason, the sense wires can not be connected directly to the device under test (see picture above), a
part of unknown wire occurs, which can not be detected (Rb). In this case both single resistances (Ra and Rb) have
to be determined (see chapter Determination of Resistances Ra and Rb) and the values have to be entered in the
corresponding fields.
The function burden settings is only available for for non-locked burden.
In this menu the following settings according to the burden can be performed:

Always confirm numeric inputs and selected functions with the ENTER key.
1 With this function key the norm burden array can be selected. After pressing this function key a pull
down menu will appear. The preselected function is marked. The function can be changed by pressing
the control keys ““ and “”. Please confirm your selection with the ENTER key.
2 With this function key you can insert a new burden step, after you have defined the new VA and cos ß
values via function key 6 and numeric keys. Confirm each inserted value with the ENTER key.
3 With this function key you can delete an existing non-locked burden step definitively. The burden step,
which should be reset, must be marked at first via the control keys ““ and ““. All changes has to be
stored, for further information see also chapter Settings.
4 With this function key all calibration values of the marked norm array will be deleted. After pressing this
function key a window with the following warning message will appear:
The function burden calibration is only available for for non-locked burden.
Status messages:
- If the calibration process has been cancelled, the message “calibration aborted“ appears
underneath the status bar.
- If the calibration process has been finished, the message “calibration successfully finished“ appears
underneath the status bar.
- If the message “amplifier error“ appears, check the fuses at the rear side of the ESCB.
- If the message “Finished with errors“ appears. Particular burden steps could not be calibrated
(repeat the calibration procedure) or the desired burden step is out of the possible calibration
range.

Before starting the calibration, it is necessary to measure the resistance of wiring of the X-circuit including
bridge, switches and devices.
The resistance measurement must be done for the used ranges (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) according to the picture below.
Before starting the calibration, it is necessary to measure the resistance of wiring of the X-circuit including
bridge, switches and devices.
The resistance measurement must be done for the used ranges (5 A, 2 A, 1 A) according to the picture below.
This procedure is only possible in mode 0 or 2. See also table on page 10.
This balancing must be done without the CT under test. The picture below shows the connection during the
balancing procedure. Before starting the balancing, the resistances of the external wiring and bridge should be
inserted to every current range.
Follow the steps as described in chapter “Menu Burden Calibration”.
The setting of the external burden can be checked by measuring the voltage on the CT under test during
100 % current and 1 VA burden (see picture below).
4-wire-operation
The secondary current of the CT under test (1 A, 2 A or 5 A) flows to the burden through 2 test wires. The voltage
at the secondary terminals of the CT under test is measured via sense wires directly. Additional measurement
uncertainties due to voltage drops on the current test wires can be avoided by these loss-free voltage
measurements.
Caution. For demagnetisation of transformers, for definition of knee point voltage and for high
voltage tests the sense wires have to be disconnected from the burden.
For inspecting the measuring mechanism of the burden you can verify every single measuring range. A special
verify mode can be selected via interface. During the verification the burden can be controlled only via interface.
An AC source, voltage source and a suitable measuring device for alternating quantities is necessary for this
verification.
If the ESCB is controlled via an external PC, we strongly recommend the use of a fibre-optic cable with
RS232 interface plug for communication between the ESCB and the PC.
Spare parts
In case of demand spare parts can be ordered at the ZERA-service department.
Trouble shooting
In case of disturbance or technical defect of the equipment try to locate the error.
Therefore it is absolutely required to consider the safety instructions.
If single modules of the equipment do not work, first the fuses should be controlled. If the fuses are intact, it
should be controlled whether voltage supply is intact to the module and/or the entire equipment.
Temperature A built-in temperature sensor of the burden The burden will be switched off
exceeded the upper has detected a temperature at the upper
limit limit. The burden must cool down, before it
can be switched on again.
Over voltage The voltage is too high. The burden will be switched off.
Overload The measured apparent load is 4.4 times The burden will be switched off
higher than the calculated value.
Initialization data not A serious internal malfunction exists. Please Do not use the ESCB in this case.
available contact the ZERA service department.
Amplifier error This malfunction can occur during the Abort of the balancing procedure
balancing procedure. The current value which
is necessary for balancing has not been
reached. Check the cabling and re-start the
balancing procedure again. If the malfunction
occurs again, please contact the ZERA service
department.
Accuracy out of range The measured apparent load is out of the None
tolerance (± 5 %) of the apparent load.
Calibration wires are Check if the calibration and sense wires are Balancing of burden will be switched
inverted connected correctly. off
Warning! Before starting servicing or maintenance work, switch off the unit and remove all
connection leads, also the mains supply.
Keep the equipment clean. In case of contamination use a damp cloth for cleaning the equipment. Do not use
cleaner!
