Introduction
• Steam is generated and used in
almost all market sectors

• Large variety of types, diameters and

pressure ranges of steam generators
and boiler systems

• Requirement for suitable treatment

concepts during normal operation

• Specific procedures for planned or

unplanned stand-still and shut-down
periods

• Preservation methods

stand-still periods over periods over several downs over several
night and over the weeks months or years

Boiler Preservation Methods

Basically 2 main types

of boiler preservation methods

Wet Preservation Dry Preservation

• If boilers are required in stand by • Long term shutdown periods
conditions • System maintenance
• Sudden and quick demand of • Routine plant inspections
steam

Limit corrosion damage by either boiler

or atmosheric contaminants

Wet Preservation

• Generally products used for wet lay-up should be consistent with operating
chemical regime
• Classified in two categories: non volatile (inorganic) and volatile

Non Volatile (inorganic) Volatile

• Softened make-up water • Demineralized make-up water
• Low to medium pressure • Medium to high pressure
• Simple systems • Complex systems
• No superheaters • Superheaters (non drainable)
Wet Preservation

• Oxygen scavengers and alkalizing • Boiler is filled completely and

agents are applied circulation should be realized (if
possible)
• Maintain pH value > 10 for all-
ferrous systems • For plants with superheater and
• pH value is limited to 9.3 for reheater only demin water quality
systems containing copper alloys and volatile products must be
applied
• Maintain increased concentration
of oxygen scavenger • To prevent air inleakage a
• As a rule of thumb between 100 pressurized nitrogen blanket
and 200 ppm should be maintained
