Q-2-What is telepresence and what sorts of companies are best suited to use it as a
communications tool?
A couple of the other answers have elaborated on what is Telepresence (it’s essentially just
another name for Video Conferencing with the emphasis that is probably a more immersive
room experience). I can say that GE is the type of company for whom this type of tool is
best suited for. GE is a large multinational and distributed organization with offices in over
150+ countries. This distribution carries all the way down to individual departments like
mine.
My department has co-workers in Austin, Detroit, New York, Massachusetts, Paris, Hungary,
Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. So, in order for us to feel like a more cohesive
group, we conduct video meetings to virtually bring the team together. It provides you a
chance to see your coworkers, laugh a little when your Hungary colleague is wearing his
ugly Christmas sweater, and look your teammates in the eyes, and gauge tone and emotion
in their responses.
Q-3- What kinds of companies could benefit from using videoconferencing? Are there any
companies that might not derive any benefits from this technology?
Video conferencing is a major part of doing business in the 21st century. It facilitates
fully visual communication with clients and colleagues anywhere and anytime.
Moreover, a video conference can save money and reduce environmental in some
surprising (but significant) ways. And with all the benefits, you could stand to lose your
competitive edge as more and more businesses adopt video conferencing as their go-to
mode of communication.

towards our goals when we can see and interact with the people we’re working with.

suites. Thanks to more reliable tech and lower prices, video conferencing is becoming
A steady stream of new tech has hugely improved usability. In 2015, 95% of users in
one survey said video conferencing has reliability improved. 92% said it was also easier
to use. Along with greater reliability, the total cost of ownership is dropping.
