MUMBAI: The rupee bucked global currency trends on Wednesday to surge to its strongest in
about 20 months as dollars flooded into local equities and bonds, prompting RBI to intervene to
limit gains, which erode the profitability of exporters.
Brokers said rupee sales seen to be prompted by the central bank pulled it back from day's highs,
but the Indian currency still ended 0.25% higher at 64.11 to the dollar — breaching the
psychologically crucial mark of 64. It touched a high of 63.93, a level last seen on August 10,
2015.
"Overseas inflows are pouring in, adding to the rupee's strength," said Jayesh Mehta, managing
director, Bank of America Merrill Lynch. "If risk-on (investment) sentiment remains among
global investors, the rupee will not reverse its rising trend. RBI looks to be more focused on
curbing volatility as it has already built up enough forex reserves."
Overseas investors are cheering RBI's focus on reining in inflation and the government’s
progress on key reforms such as GST and efforts to improve tax compliance. GST is expected to
be rolled out on July 1.

Foreign portfolio investors have invested Rs 90,762 crore so far this calendar year.
Exporters will take a hit if the trend is sustained, making Indianmade products less competitive
than those coming from countries such as China or Vietnam.
FEARING LOSSES
With exports picking up in the past few months, the rupee's rise couldn't have come at a worse
time."Attractiveness of the Indian economy will lead to a rise in inflows. However, we will lose
vis-à-vis Chinese exports.
"The government needs to bilaterally work with the US and convince them to give privileges to
us because small enterprises suffer the most when China fixes the rate of its currency. They (the
US) should support free-market economies and free floating currencies like ours," said Mahavir
Pratap Sharma, chairman, Carpet Export Promotion Council.
But there are worries that the rupee might have overdone its gains and could reverse amid a
likely slowdown in foreign institutional investor (FII) inflows for the rest of the year.
