1 Design Concepts
1.1 Span Arrangement
The structure is a simply supported structure with overall span length of 21m and effective span length
(c/c of bearings) as 20m. The total length of the Girder is 20.3 m. The type of girder is Precast RCC I
Girder.

1.2 Superstructure
The superstructure consists of 4 numbers of Precast RCC Girder with cast in-situ RCC deck
slab supported over Elastomeric bearings. The girders are spaced at a distance of 2.7 m centre to
centre with a cantilever of 1.35m on either side of the deck. The overall width of the deck is 10.8m
which consists of 0.5 m wide Crash Barrier on both sides and a carriage way of width 7.8m that
caters for a 2 lane traffic.

1.3 Substructure
The substructure consists of RCC Solid / Plate type piers and RCC Pier Cap

1.4 Foundation
Pile foundation is adopted for all the Abutments and Piers. Pile Capacity is considered as per the
recommendations given in the Geotech report.

1.5 Materials Used


Grade of Concrete
PSC I Girder = M 35
Deck Slab = M 35
Abutment / Pier = M 35
Foundation = M 35

Grade of Steel
Untensioned Reinforcing Steel = Fe 500

Bearing Type
Elastomeric bearings is used for all the spans.

1.6 Methodology for Grillage Analysis


Analysis for Dead Load of Girder, Diaphragm and Deck slab, SIDL and Live Load in the Longitudinal
direction is calculated using Grillage model. For Transverse Analysis of dead load , SIDL , Live Load
& footpath Load, Continuous beam model in STAAD is created and the analysis is carried out.

For Grillage analysis, the span is discretized into 21 nodes (20 beam members) in longitudinal
direction. First node starts at the C/L of bearings, followed by mid of thickened section, start of
thickened section, mid of varying section and end of mid section. Further nodes are provided at
equal distance up to the centre line of the girder / symmetry. Nodes are placed symmetrically
on both sides from the centre line of the girder as described above. Similarly required number of
longitudinal beams are created and the girder section properties are assigned appropriately.
Dummy beams are created parallel to the longitudinal beams at the edge of the deck slab in order
to apply crash barrier loads.

Transverse beams are provided connecting the longitudinal beams and deck slab property is
assigned to the transverse beams.

Supports are provided at appropriate locations based on the actual support condition.

Dead load of girder, deck slab, diaphragm and SIDL loads are calculated based on the unit weights
of the materials used and applied on the grillage model and analysed.

Live load are calculated based on IRC: 6 -2017 and applied on the grillage model and analysed.

All the forces and moments on the girders are extracted from the grillage analysis and further
design is carried out by Limit state design based on IRC: 112 - 2011
