Discussion: Substance Abuse

People addicted to illicit drugs find it so hard to stop because addiction is a brain disease. People
with an addiction can feel scared of what will happen if they don't keep taking the drug. When
someone stops using a drug, they might feel very sick for a while and feel a strong desire to take
the drug again. I first learned about drugs good/bad side of them when I took my first health
education course as a high school freshman. I personally think we are not even close to doing
enough to educate children at a young age about drugs. The abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit
drugs are the leading cause of preventable, premature death and disability in the United States.
Youth are among the most vulnerable in our population because they are at a much higher risk
for developing a substance use disorder later in life.

3 recommendations to be drug-free:

 Freedom from physical dependency. When we become dependent on drugs, we need to

keep taking them in order to avoid experiencing withdrawal symptoms. This is because
our body has grown accustomed to functioning with drugs, so when we stop using them,
our body responds with negative effects.
 Improved finances. The constant craving over drugs can lead us to spend more money on
our addiction than we could have ever imagined. By eliminating that cost by being drug-
free, we can allow ourselves to start putting our money towards the things that we want to
be spending on, rather than the things we have to spend it on.
 Improved emotional health. Our emotional health can significantly improve when we are
drug-free because we are able to process our emotions without being influenced by drugs.

There are many alternatives to make better choices without needing to experience any harmful
side effects. Human interactions and relationships are at the core of good mental health care. At
times, we all need our friends and families for encouragement, and it's important that we all
know there are people in our lives who we can reach out to for support when we are going
through adversity. Additionally, support groups and treatment programs can help. Through these
services, there are counselors who will understand what you're going through and can give you
advice on how to handle life's problems without using drugs. Lastly, a growing number of
colleges are offering special services to students who are recovering from drug addictions and
want to stay in school without being exposed to excessive drug use.
