Act. 2: Reflection on Institutionalism

LONG AND TEDIOUS

My thoughts and insights on institutionalism

I admit that I am, at first, overwhelmed by the volume of information presented to us with
regards to the topic of institutionalism. The amount of data given by the presenter who
discussed this topic is no where close to the quantity given recently. Though this is still to my
advantage since I get to understand said topic in a more detailed and in-depth manner.
The definition of institutionalism isn't surprising at all, since said given meaning is very
close to what I actually have in mind, which is taking at a closer look at institutions and how it
affects human activities.
I think the first notable thing to highlight in my experience on learning this topic is how
abstract the definition and idea of what institutions are, since it can also refer to laws, routines,
symbolic systems and the like. This is distant to my previous thoughts regarding it, which are
limited to government and political organizations. This then brings me to my next point of
discussion; the difference between it (institutions) and organizations. They are quite similar
indeed, but the general contrast between them is that the former have a specific cause, is
decentralized, governed by customs and values, is continuous, and have a goal that lean
towards the greater good. The latter on the other hand is united, and aims to achieve a desired
end that favors its stakeholders, can either be centralized or decentralized, directed by rules and
regulations, and have a life cycle.
When we get to the concepts of institutionalism, it honestly gets stressing and boring
since its super-long and is constructed in a not-so-easy-to-understand manner. Though there
are only seven concepts, within it contains numerous ideas and theories. The second concept;
New Institutionalism is frustrating since it contains eight subfields! As I was making a summary
of the topic, I am constantly searching on the internet for other meanings and explanations for
these concepts, so that I get the right idea of what these said concepts are actaully about.
While concepts such as Institutional Economics, New Institutional Economics and
Institutionalism in International Realtions really strike my interest and I would certainly love to
read, study and discuss more about it, those (concepts and ideas) that genuinely bore me
outnumber them (those that I like) by a lot. Nonetheless, I have to study them all, which I
consider as quite a bummer.
