HOLISTIC HEALTH
What is health and wellness?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as the state of complete
physical, mental, and social well-being and not just merely the absence of disease. Having a
good health enables a person to lead a socially and economically productive life.
Wellness is the quality of life or state of being healthy physically, mentally,
emotionally, socially, and spiritually. A healthy and balanced mind, body, and spirit translate
into good well-being. It’s is a continuous process of becoming aware of and making choices
toward a more successful existence.

Lecture 2

Dimensions of Health

There are different dimensions of health interacting together to attain wellness.

1. Physical health includes any aspect needed to keep the


body in good condition such as physical activity and proper
nutrition. Your physical health serves as the foundation of
achieving wellness.

2. Emotional health includes the ability to manage your


emotions and behaviors to cope with stress and adjust to
change. A good emotional health allows you to work, study,
relax, and enjoy activities.

3. Social health includes the ability to interact with other


people and knowing how to respect one’s self and others. If
you are socially healthy, you can create and maintain
healthy relationships with family, friends, peers, and people
in the community.

4. Mental health includes your ability to analyze, evaluate, and


make sound decisions which involve critical thinking. This
includes determination of continuous personal growth and
willingness to effectively learn and use new information for
personal, family, and career growth.

5. Spiritual health includes a high level of faith, hope, and


commitment in a belief system that brings purpose to life.
You grow positively, which includes connection to one’s
self, others, and a higher or larger reality.

Lecture 3

What are the stages of growth and development?

A person goes through different stages of physical growth and development. During each of
these stages, multiple changes occur.

What is Puberty?

Puberty is the period when your body begins to change and develop into an adult. This is the
time when males and females are physically able to reproduce. You will notice changes not just
on your body but also on how you think, feel, and interact with other people. During this period,
secondary sex characteristics start to develop. These characteristics include body hair, breast
development in females, and muscles in males.
Development in puberty vary individual. It usually starts between the ages 8 to 13 in girls and
9 to 15 in boys. Usually, puberty starts earlier in girls than in boys. This explains why girls seem to
grow faster that in boys; or some of your classmates or friends still look like kids while some look
like adult.
Changes in the body vary. It means that you don’t experience the exact changes that others
experienced. You may feel awkward about these changes but you should remember that
everybody goes through these changes.

Changes in the Health Dimensions During Adolescence

What are the different types of development?


Rapid physical changes are seen in the structure of an adolescent’s body. These changes vary
among boys and girls. These include rapid gains in height and weight, development of secondary
sex characteristics, and continued brain development.

1. Physical changes and developments


 Female Body
Between the ages 8-15, girls go through a lot of physical changes such as:
 enlargement of breasts
 increase in height
 weight gain due to build-up
 widening of hips
 reduce in the size of waist
 start of menstruation
 growth of public and other body hairs
 more active sweat and oil glands and change in body odor
 possible development of acne
 Male Body
For boys, noticeable physical changes during puberty occur between 12-15 year old.
 increase in height with an average of 4.1 inches per year
 increase in weight due to increased muscle development
 growth of pubic and other body hairs

How do these physical changes affect adolescents?

1. They frequently sleep longer.


2. They may be clumsier because of growth spurts.
3. They may become overly sensitive or feel awkward about their weight and height and the growth of
hairs in their body.
4. They may be self-conscious because they are not physically developing at the same rate with their
peers.

2. Mental Changes
What are these mental changes?
a. Learning to look beyond one’s self and understanding other people’s point of view
b. Possible development of new interests and beginning to focus on career goals.
c. Development of logical reasoning where adolescents start to solve more complicated problems.
d. Starting to explore new ways of thinking, reasoning, and making decisions.
e. Starting to think more flexibly and help in making later choice.

How do mental changes affect the adolescents?


 They demonstrate a heightened level of consciousness.
 They tend to become very cause-oriented.
 They tend to exhibit a “justice” orientation.
 They exhibit “it can happen to me” syndrome also known as “personal fable.”

3. Emotional Changes
a. Starting to feel awkward.
b. Being more sensitive about many things, including what others say.
c. Becoming conscious about having “defects.” Sometimes, feeling misunderstood.
d. Difficulty in communicating thoughts and feelings.

How do emotional changes affect adolescents?


 They start spending more time with friends that with their own family.
 They may have more questions about sexuality.
 They may begin to keep a journal or diary.
 They may begin locking their bedroom doors.
 They may become elusive about where they are going and who are with them.

4. Social Changes
a. Identity crisis.
b. Seeking more independence.
c. Pursuing more responsibility at home and school.
d. Being easily influenced by friends, especially when it comes to behavior, sense of self, and, self-
esteem.
e. Having a stronger individual set of values and morals.
f. Embracing opinions of influential people in one’s life in terms of preferences, likes, and dislikes.

How do social changes affect adolescents?


 They become involved in multiple hobbies or clubs.
 They may become more argumentative.
 They may not want to be seen with their parents in public.
 They may begin to interact with adults as equals.
