Millions of people around the world suffer from malnutrition and eating
disorders. Many families worldwide cannot afford or do not have enough access
to nutritious food due to poverty. Filipinos are not spared from these conditions.
Filipino adolescents suffer from nutritional problems, too. However, it is
important for growing adolescents to acquire the needed nutrients for healthier
growth and development. So as growing adolescents, you must learn and
understand these problems so you could prevent them from occurring.

WHAT IS MALNUTRITION?

Malnutrition is any condition in which an individual’s

intake of nutrients is inadequate, excessive, or imbalance.

Eating a lot does not necessarily equate to getting the

right nutrients you need. You may be eating a lot but if the
food you are eating do not contain the necessary nutrients
needed by the body, you may still suffer from malnutrition.

What are the negative effects of malnutrition among adolescents?

1. Lower resistance to disease

2. Delay in growth and development
3. Poor performance in school
4. Sluggish and easily gets tired
5. Poor health in adulthood
6. Increased risk of mortality
7. Delay in the development of secondary sexual characteristics

TWO TYPES OF MALNUTRITION

1. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a form of malnutrition where there is not
enough protein and calorie intake. This is a condition wherein the body lacks the
required macronutrients. A child having low calorie and protein may result to
conditions called kwashiorkor and marasmus. Although these conditions
generally affect young children, these may later affect adolescents when not
treated.

2. Micronutrient deficiency is the lack or shortage of essential vitamins and

minerals for proper growth and development. Deficiency of nutrients leads to
different health problems such as anemia, preventable blindness, osteoporosis,
goiter, and other.

Why are micronutrients important in the developing world?

Micronutrients play a very important role in developing countries, as well as in

the citizen’s quality of life. Adequate intake of vitamins and minerals can spell the
difference between a healthful and productive life, and being ill.

Why do people lack micronutrients?

We may have enough food to eat but do not get enough micronutrients. There are certain
foods, which contain significant amounts of micronutrients. It is also important to
consider the availability and accessibility of nutrient-rich foods and their proper
preparation and consumptio

Ways to prevent malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.

1. Food-based strategies
a. Food Fortification is the process of adding vitamins and minerals to
regularly consumed food products
b. Biofortification is a process of developing nutrient-dense staple crops
through breeding. Rice, corn and other staple foods are engineered to have
greater amount of nutrients.
c. Dietary diversity is simply eating a variety of food that has a balanced diet
d. Dietary Supplement is a product usually in capsule, tablet, powder, or
syrup that contains vitamins and minerals intended to add nutritional values
to the diet.
2. Public health approaches – education, disease control, socio-economic and
environmental aspects

LECTURE 2
Having a healthy body weight is very desirable. Because of social pressure, some
people became conscious of their body figures that lead to unhealthy relation with food.
Women feel the need to imitate unattainable thin figures of stars or models while men
aspire to have a “ perfect” body of professional athletes or models. These desires are the
reasons that lead to unhealthy eating behaviours.

What is eating disorder?

LEARNING MODULE IN HEALTH 7 S.Y. 2020-2021

Eating disorder is a term used to describe illness characterized by disturbance in

attitudes and behaviours of eating, body weight, and body image. It is an abnormal
eating habit, which results to insufficient or excessive food intake. Eating disorder can
cause serious medical complications and can even cause death.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EATING DISORDER

1. ANOREXIA NERVOSA – is an eating disorder wherein one seats too little food
resulting to excessive weight loss.

A person with anorexia nervosa has poor body image and too concerned on weight and
appearance. He/she does not see an accurate reflection of his/her looks in the mirror.
He/she imagines him/herself as fat but in reality he/she is dangerously thin.

Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia

 Deliberate self-starvation with abnormal weight loss
 Intense and persistent fear of gaining weight and thus refusing to eat
 Compulsive exercise
Health Consequences
 Weakness
 Fatigue
 Nutritional deficiencies
 Low blood pressure
 Death
2. BULIMIA NERVOSA- is an eating disorder wherein a person feels the urge to eat
large amount of food then try to eliminate the food eaten through self-induced
vomiting or use of laxative to undo the effects of bulk eating.

People with this disorder are too concerned about their weight and appearance. Just like
in anorexia, they see themselves fat, even if they are not.

Signs and Symptoms of Bulimia:

 Exhibiting signs of dehydration
 Bloating and irregular bowel movement
 Soring in the mouth and throat
 Large food intake with no weight gain
 Exercising excessively
 Going to the bathroom immediately after meals
Health Consequences

7
LEARNING MODULE IN HEALTH 7 S.Y. 2020-2021
 Dehydration
 Weakness and fatigue
 Potential gastric rapture during periods of binging
 Electrolyte and chemical imbalances
 Chronic irregular bowel movements

3. BINGE-EATING DISORDER- is an eating disorder where there is an

uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food. It is also called compulsive
overeating.

Once in a while, a person overeats. There’s no problem with that. But if a person can no
longer control the compulsion to overeat, that’s where the problem lies. This is a
psychological problem since a person suffering from this disease doesn’t feel the urge to
stop eating even if he is full.
Depressed, stressed, or nervous people usually exhibit this. Instead of expressing their
feelings, they turn their attention to eating.

Signs and Symptoms:

 Steal or hoards food in strange places
 Often overweight
 Lack of control during binging
 Eat too fast or too much in private
 Negative self-esteem, poor body image
Health Consequences:
 High cholesterol level
 High blood pressure
 Diabetes
 Gallbladder disease
 Heart disease

HOW WILL YOU RECOGNIZE EATING DISORDER?

Signs of eating disorder can be hard to detect sometimes. Young people tend to
display behavior that may be considered as signs for the disorders. These people having the
following signs of eating disorders are at risk.

1. Have low self-esteem and negative body image

2. Not

as to avoid being too critical. Instead, focus on the specific behaviors that tend to disturb
the person.

1. Familiarize yourself about the facts and myths of eating disorder

2. Be honest.
3. Be caring but firm.
4. Compliment
5. Be a good role model
6. People struggling with eating disorders need professional help.

DECISION-MAKING SKILLS ABOUT PROPER NUTRITION

Adolescents like you have special nutritional needs. You need a tremendous
amount of calories and a large amount of nutrients to support growth.
In our culture, food is used to entertain, celebrate, and show appreciation. It is
also used for reward and for comfort. The temptation to eat inappropriately during these
situations cannot be avoided. Thus, you must make intelligent decision in your food
choices. You have to learn to consider your nutritional needs. Choosing a healthy diet is
important for your well-being. Food nourishes our bodies as well as our senses and
emotions. By making good eating choices, you are more likely to achieve proper growth
and development, and maintain good health throughout your lives.
