1.0 SCOPE
This specification defines the permissible noise levels for equipment; defines noise measurement
procedures including required noise measurement locations; and defines information that must be
supplied with the proposal.
This specification stipulates the requirements for Supplier's equipment that will provide a low
noise environment. This specification identifies equipment noise level limitations, noise testing
requirements, and noise data documentation requirements. These limitations and requirements
apply to equipment that generates noise in the speech and hearing range and to stationary and
mobile equipment and machinery that may produce continuous, intermittent, or impulsive noise.

3.1 Supplier shall conform to all requirements of this specification, unless otherwise
specifically agreed to in writing by Purchaser.
3.2 This specification requires compliance with Purchaser noise level limitations and
applicable federal, state, county, and local laws and regulations.
3.3 Supplier shall state in writing any exceptions to the requirements of this specification.
3.4 Supplier shall contact Purchaser for resolution regarding any interpretation of this
specification or conflict between this specification and other Purchaser specifications
before proceeding with any work.
3.5 The noise measurement techniques, instrumentation, and test conditions utilized to
acquire noise level data that is reported according to this specification for all equipment
shall comply with the measurement procedures contained in this specification.
3.6 Supplier shall submit all available sound pressure level and sound power level data with
the proposal, as requested on the datasheets, to qualify for bid evaluation.
3.7 When mufflers, silencers, mutes, diffusers, and other similar equipment are proposed,

given to casing radiation to ensure that the regenerated noise does not exceed the
allowable sound pressure level.
3.8 Final test noise measurements shall be made on the purchased equipment by Supplier
and test data made available to Purchaser prior to shipment. Test data shall be provided
on Appendix A form. Purchaser reserves the right to send qualified representatives to
Supplier's plant and Component Supplier's plant to observe or assist in the noise tests.
Suppliers shall notify Purchaser at least 10 days in advance of such tests.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.1 dBA: Sound pressure level in decibels (reference 20 by 10:(-6:) newtons per square
meter) as read on a sound level meter set to the A weighted network, slow response
setting.
4.2 A-Weighted: A-Weighted means a specific weighting of the sound pressure level for the
purpose of determining the human response to sound. The specific weighting
characteristics and tolerances are those given in ASA S1.4.
4.3 Equipment Train: A system, supplied or packaged by Supplier, comprised of a driver, all
driven equipment including gears and couplings, and all auxiliary equipment.
4.4 PWL (Sound Power Level): Expressed in decibels (reference 10:(-12:) watts).

Revision 1
4.5 SPL (Sound Pressure Level): Expressed in decibels (reference 20 by 10:(-6:) newtons
per square meter).
5.1 Purchaser's objective is to procure equipment that will not exceed a noise level of 85 dBA
at a distance of 1 m. Additionally, Purchaser shall evaluate other noise limits proposed
by Supplier provided the requirements of this specification are satisfied.
5.2 Noise from equipment trains includes the total combined noise from driver, driven
equipment including any gears and couplings, and auxiliary equipment, supplied, but not
necessarily manufactured by Supplier. Individual equipment items in an equipment train
supplied by Supplier need not be limited to 85 dBA provided that the complete equipment
train does not exceed 85 dBA when measured in accordance with this specification. The
output of the various noise sources shall be added using the logarithmic sum method.
Noise limits apply at all operating points within the equipment's' normal performance
range. Suppliers shall include an alternative quotation to attain the 85 dBA noise levels.
5.3 Octave-band sound pressure limits in dB for the 85 dBA sound pressure levels (at 1 m
distance) established in this specification shall generally be as follows:
dB 106 102 95 90 85 82 81 81 83 90
dB 101 97 90 85 80 77 76 76 78 85
NOTE: the 90 dBA octave band SPL limits are provided as a reference only.

Revision 1
5.4 The sound pressure level (SPL) must be given in each of the octave band frequencies
shown in 5.3 for his equipment, and the overall sound levels in dBA, illustrating it meets
the 85 dBA requirement.
5.5 Impulsive or impact noise shall not exceed 140 dB peak sound pressure level at the
measurement locations listed in this specification.
5.6 Emergency services, including, but not limited to safety relief valves, alarms, and fire
water pumps, are excluded from meeting any noise limit defined in this specification
when operating outdoors.
6.0 DOCUMENTATION
6.1 Supplier shall state noise guarantees for each component of each equipment train or for
each equipment train as a whole on the Equipment Noise Level Data Sheet.
A. Supplier shall complete the Equipment Noise Level Data Sheet for the following
conditions as applicable:
6.2 Control valve Suppliers shall utilize standard calculation or measurement procedures for
determining control valve noise.
6.3 Equipment shall be guaranteed to meet the noise limits specified in this specification,
unless other limits are agreed upon and included in the Purchase Order. Guarantee shall
be included in Supplier's quotation and on Equipment Noise Level Data Sheet.
7.0 REQUIREMENTS
7.1 General
A. The minimum allowable free SPL (field sound pressure) level shall be according
to the datasheet and measured at 1 m from the major boundary surfaces of the
equipment operating at rated load. If sound PWL (power levels) are supplied, the
calculated free field SPL at 1 m shall not exceed the limit on the datasheet
including the directivity effect. Additionally, the noise level at an operator's
station on Supplier's equipment, regardless of source, shall not exceed the limits
on the datasheets.
B. Proposal shall be the supplier's best offer of untreated equipment that meets the
Datasheet requirement. In addition, the supplier is encouraged to submit
equipment designs that provide for optimal noise reduction. If the untreated
equipment exceeds the level on the Datasheets, the supplier shall propose
equipment employing integral noise reduction treatments that meet the
requirement.
C. Supplier shall guarantee that the equipment noise levels measured at Supplier's
facility prior to shipment do not exceed the allowable SPL limit as specified on
the datasheets. Supplier shall guarantee that the sum of noise sources for
equipment supplied within the supplier's package shall not exceed the specified
limit, including equipment that Supplier may purchase and install on the supplier's
package (such as motors, gearboxes, hydraulic devices, blowers, fans, and
pneumatic and electrical devices).
A. Instruments used to measure noise levels shall meet ASA S1.4, Type I, and ASA
S1.11, Class II, or latest revision.
