INSTRUCTION/CRITERIA
Illustrate the Monitor of radar with demonstration and explain the following items.

1. Demonstrate and explain the range which it can see a target of a specific size, observed in
6 nautical miles and 12 nautical miles?
2. Demonstrate and explain the accuracy of its measurement of the target in range and angle, observed in 3
nautical miles and 6 nautical miles?
3. Demonstrate and explain detect the desired target echoes?
4. Explain the ability to distinguish one target from another?
5. What the function of the Gain control?

ANSWER:
1. The range which is can see a target specific size is depending on several factors such as being of the antenna
above the waterline, The height of the target above the sea, the size, shape and material of target, and the
atmosphere conditions.
2. One of the most important features of the radar is now accurately the bearing of target can be measured. The
accuracy of bearing measurement is depending on the narrowness of the line radar beam. However, the bearing is
usually taken relative to the ship’s heading and thus proper adjustment to of the heading marker at installation is an
important factor ensuring bearing accuracy. To minimize error when measuring the bearing of the target, put the
target echo at the extreme position on the screen by reflecting suitable range.
3. Its ability to detect the desired target echo when marked by large clutter echoes, unintentional interfering signals
from other “friendly” transmitters, or in international radiation from hostile jamming (if a military radar).
4. The ability to distinguish one target from another on the same bearing but at different ranges. The degree of range
resolution depends on the width of the transmitted pulse, the types and sizes of targets, and the efficiency of the
receiver and indicator. Pulse width is the the primary factor in range resolution. A well designed radar system with
all other factors at maximum efficiency, should be able to distinguish targets separated by one-half the pulse width
time.
5. The purpose of a gain control is to tune the amp’s input stage to accept the gead units voltage level. Gain is used
to increase the receiving sensitivity of the radar. It needs to be adjusted to level where targets are visible but there is
no other interference on the screen.
