1. A car drives from A – B along the rod shown in a time of 50 s. Estimate

travelling a distance of 100 m.

2. A ball is thrown upwards with a velocity of 5 ms-1. Calculate its velocity after 15 s.

3. A space ship travelling at 100ms-1 is slowed down by a rocket motor to a final velocity
of 10 ms-1 in 20 s. Calculate the acceleration of the spaceship.

Projectile motion
1. A ball is kicked with a velocity of 4 ms-1 at an angle of 20° to the horizontal. Calculate:

The vertical component of velocity

The time of flight

The horizontal component of velocity

The range

2. A ball kicked at an angle of 20° to the horizontal travels a horizontal distance of 20 m.

Calculate the initial speed of the ball

Types of force
1. The diagram a 2 kg mass and a 5 kg mass hanging from a string that
passes over two frictionless pulleys in a vacuum.

Draw the forces acting on each hanging mass

Taking g = 10 ms-2 calculate the size of each force

2. A 5 kg box is sliding down a plane inclined at 30° to the horizontal.

Draw the forces acting on the box

Momentum
1. In this question we are going to consider a frog pushing away from a toy boat

The force exerted by the frog is constant, and takes place for a time, t.

Deduce:

a. The momentum of the frog after the push

b. The impulse of the frog

c. The force exerted on the frog

d. The force exerted on the boat

2. The mass of the boat is 300g, the mass of the frog 100 g.
a Calculate the velocity of the boat if the velocity of the frog is 0.1 ms-1

b If the time of contact is 0.5 s calculate the force exerted by the frog

Collisions
1. A Frictionless cart of mass 0.5 kg traveling at 2 ms-1 collides with another cart which
has half the mass and is travelling at 1ms-1 in the other direction. After the collision
the carts stick together.

Draw a diagram of the collision

Calculate the velocity after the collision

Calculate the loss in kinetic energy

1. State Newton’s second law.

2. The Diagram represents two masses hanging on a frictionless pulley M > m


a. Draw a free body diagram for M indicating the direction of acceleration.

c. Apply Newton’s 2nd to M to get an equation for the tension

d. if the Ferrari is 60% efficient calculate the energy put in.

e. The energy density of petrol is 30 MJL-1. calculate the amount of liters used by the Ferrari
