How do you make a nanomachine?

A machine is something with moving wheels, gears, and levers that can (16)_______ useful jobs for
us, but how do you make moving parts from something as tiny (17)_____ a molecule? Just imagine
trying to build a clock from gears that are millions of times (18)_______ than usual!

It turns out there is a way to do it. Some molecules are regularly shaped and symmetrical so they
(19)______ no overall positive or negative charges. Other molecules are not symmetrical, which
means they have slightly more positive charge at one end and slightly more negative charge at the
other. (20)_______ are called polar molecules and water is the best known example. Water sticks to
a lot of things and cleans (21)_______ well because it has a positive "pole" at one end and a negative
pole at the other. We can use this idea to make a molecular machine.

Suppose you take a molecule made from a ring of atoms that has a slightly positive charge in one
place. Now thread it over another molecule made (22)_______a rod of atoms, which has slightly
negative charges at its two ends. The positive ring will pull toward one of the negative charges so the
ring will lift upward. Now add some energy and you can make the ring move back down, toward the
other negative charge. (23)_______ this way, you can make the ring move back and forth or up and
down, a bit like a nanoscopic elevator! (24)_______ extending this idea, we can gradually make
more complex machines with parts that shuffle back and forth, move around one another, or even
rotate like tiny electric motors.

Ingenious ideas like this (25)________ developed by three brilliant scientists who won the Nobel
Prize in Chemistry in 2016.

Voltaire
François-Marie Arouet (also known as Voltaire) was a French philosopher. He was born in 1694 and
grew up in Poitou. He died in Paris in 1778.

Voltaire did not like France at the time because he thought that it was old fashioned. He also did not
like the Church and thought that people should be allowed to believe what they want. However he
did not like democracy either and thought that a country needed to be led by a wise and strong king.
Voltaire had to live in exile in England for three years from 1726 to 1729 where these ideas were
more common. He liked the philosophy of John Locke.

Voltaire was also a writer. He wrote many books, poems and plays, some of which are still liked
today. A lot of his work was against France and the Church. This meant that he was unpopular at first
but became more popular towards the time of the French Revolution. When he died, aged 83,
Voltaire was a hero of French people. He also studied science and wrote a lot about people and
places he knew.

Voltaire believed in God but did not believe in a god personally involved in people's lives, like
the Christian god. This is called Deism. When he died in Paris, Voltaire was not allowed to be buried
in a church because he did not believe in the Christian god.

Ice-Fishing
The first tip for a good day of ice fishing is to wear the right clothes. You should dress in layers. Wear
2 or 3 shirts, so you can take off a layer when you are warm. Wear a face mask, a warm hat with ear
flaps over your ears, and warm gloves and boots.

The second tip is to stay warm. Some people put up cloth tents when they go ice fishing. Some
people own small ice houses where they can stay warm. You can use a small heater inside the tent
or outside on the ice. Be sure to take a hot drink like hot chocolate. You should move around to stay
warm. Some people take ice skates.

The third tip is to check the ice. Look at it carefully. The ice must be 4 or more inches thick. This is
the ice rule: “Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky.” Thick ice is safe for ice
fishing. Thin ice is dangerous.

The fourth tip is to take the right tools. You need to drill a hole in the ice with an ice drill. Then make
the hole bigger with a chopping tool, like an ax. You need to carry your bait in a bait bucket. Use
worms or small fish for bait. You need a chair to sit on. Take a folding chair so you can carry it easily.
Be sure to take your fish hooks and fishing rod! Pull all your tools on a sled. Take your cell phone.
You might need to call for help.

The fifth tip is to have a great time!

Social Dolphins
Dolphins are often (46)_______ as one of Earth's most intelligent animals. They are social creatures,
(47)_______ in pods of up to a dozen individuals. In places with a high abundance of food, pods can
merge temporarily, forming a superpod; (48)______ groupings may exceed 1,000 dolphins. They
communicate using a variety of clicks, whistle-like sounds and other vocalizations.
Membership in pods is not rigid; interchange is common. Dolphins can, (49)________, establish
strong social bonds; they will stay with injured or ill individuals, (50)______ helping them to breathe
by bringing them to the surface if needed. This altruism does not appear to be (51)_______ to their
own species. The dolphin Moko in New Zealand has been observed guiding a female Pygmy
Sperm Whale together with her calf out of shallow water (52)_______ they had stranded several
times. They have also been seen protecting swimmers from sharks by swimming circles around the
swimmers or charging the sharks to make them go away.

Dolphins also display culture, something long believed to be (53)_______ to humans. In May 2005, a
(54)__________ in Australia found Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) teaching their
young to use tools. They cover their snouts with sponges to protect them while foraging (looking or
searching for food or provisions.) Using sponges as mouth protection as well as other transmitted
behavior (55)_______ dolphins' intelligence. This knowledge is mostly transferred by mothers to
daughters.
