UNIT:1 (Design of Spur & Helical Gear)

Helical Gears
1. A pair of helical gear with 35 degree helix angle is used to transmit 17 kW at 12000 RPM
of the pinion. The velocity ratio is 5:1.Both the gears are made of hardened steel of static
strength 120 MPa. The gears are 20 degree stub and the pinion is to have 24 teeth. The
face width may be taken as 12 times the module. Find the module and the face width
from the stand point of strength and check the gears for wear.[2017-18]

2. A pair of helical gears is to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20° stub in diametric plane and
have a helix angle of 45°. The pinion runs at 10 000 r.p.m. and has 80 mm pitch diameter.
The gear has 320 mm pitch diameter. If the gears are made of cast steel having allowable
static strength of 100 MPa; determine a suitable module and face width from static
strength considerations and check the gears for wear, given σes = 618 MPa.[2016-
17,2014-15]
3. The following data is given for a pair of parallel helical gears made of steel :
Power transmitted = 20 kW, np = 720 rpm, zp = 35, zg = 70, centre distance = 285 mm,
normal module = 5 mm, b = 50 mm, normal pressure angle = 20°, S. = 600 N/mm2,
surface hardness number = 300 BHN, grade of machining = 6, Service factor = 1.25
Calculate:
(a) The helix angle; (b) Beam strength, (c) Wear strength, (d) Static load, (e)The dynamic
load by Buckingham's equation, (f) Effective factor of safety against bending failure.
[2015-16]
4. A pair of helical gears transmits 5 KW. The following are its details:
Teeth on pinion & gear = 25 &50 Normal module =4 mm, helix angle=20 degree, normal pressure
angle=20 degree. Determine the axial, tangential and radial components of the tooth load if pinion
rotates at 1200 rpm.[2012-13]

5. A herringbone speed reducer consists of a 26 teeth pinion driving a 104 teeth gear. The
gears have normal module of 2 mm. The pressure and helix angle is 20 and 25 degree
respectively. The pinion receives 100 KW power through its shaft and rotates at 3600
rpm. The face width of each half is 35 mm. The gears are made of alloy steel 30NI4Cr1
(Sut=1500 N/mm2) and heat treated to a surface hardness of 450 BHN. The service factor
is 1.25.Determine the factor of safety against bending and pitting failure.

6. A pair of herringbone gears is to transmit 15 kW. The teeth are 20° stub in diametral
plane and have a helix angle of 45°. The pinion runs at 10 000 r.p.m. and has 80 mm
pitch diameter. The gear has 320 mm pitch diameter. If the gears are made of cast steel
having allowable static strength of 100 MPa; determine a suitable module and face width
from static strength considerations and check the gears for wear, given σes = 618 MPa.
