TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT.

CASE STUDY
TOD NODE /
STATION AREA
• The TOD Standard has been
designed to evaluate new
urban development.
• The Standard has a
complementary methodology
and set of metrics for use in
evaluating larger, existing areas
surrounding high-capacity
transit stations.
• These metrics have been
developed to allow
stakeholders to understand
existing land use
characteristics, or to
benchmark newly developed
station area plans in relation to
best practice transit-oriented
places.
FUNCTIONS
AND ZONING

ADMIN (V,S) TRANSIT (P,V,S) PERIPHERAL(P,S) CORE(P,V,S)

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
• Objective: Maximum Passenger
Convenience with Fast and Efficient
Passenger Flow
• Design Approach and Hierarchy:
should be done from whole to part:
Primary Order: Describes the creation of
Station volumes through large scale
engineering. Yard alignment, no. & size of
platform, size & location of concourses
etc.
Secondary Order: Building Components,
such as detailing of concoursespace,
facilities of passengers, operational
offices, staircases, escalators, elevators,
passageway, entry, exit, roof, ceilings,
walls etc.
Tertiary Order: Passenger Information
System, Seating, Lighting etc.
PRIMARY DATA
1.Station Facility Audit Survey
Objective : To cross-check the availability of passenger’s
amenities in the railway station as per the standards of Indian
Railway Manual.

2.Station User Opinion Survey – 250 Samples

Objective : To comprehend the user’s outlook (satisfaction level)
on the activities / components of the railway station for further
detailed surveys and analysis.

3.Station User Characteristics Survey – 250 Samples

Objective : To analyse user’s characteristics:
• Dwell Time of each movement and activity
• Profession,
• Income level,
• Time spent on the platforms or waiting lounge, and
• Luggage carried.
4.Passenger count survey by videography and photography
approach
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI)

• To calculate productivity of any Station /

terminal in terms of its Physical and
Operational characteristics in the most
relevant Quantitative method is by
assessing the Level of Service (LOS), from
part to whole.
• Also, according to Indian Railway manual
2009, Creation of Station Volumes by
means of number & size of platforms, size
& location of concourse etc. is the primary
order for station planning & design, to
fulfill their objective of Maximum
Passenger Convenience with Fast and
Efficient Passenger Flow
Identified Key Performance Indicators:
• Dwell Time
• Level of Service (LOS)
-- Average Passenger Space (m²/pax)
-- Flow Rate (pax/m/min)

the following

•Availability of PT
like bus service &
metro,
•Multilevel car
parking etc.
•Lower
Congestion level
as compare to
Paharganj.

INFERENCE:
1.Proper Spatial Zoning-
• No passenger will have the need to walk 2 mins apart from his set course for basic
amenities. This reduces unnecessary crowding and easy monitoring further improving
time taken aspects and security.
• The connectivity through seperate floors creates a barrier free design making it
universally accessible.
• Secluded space for admin. creates a clean office space without interupption and and
management.
• Proper Signage and Differentiation between pathway and stairs must be included.
2. Circulation-
• The Seperate entry and exit routes leading to and fro parking, encouraging the
pedestratian path from RailTerminus to Metro, covers the major objective of TOD by
saving the time wasted before and after commute.
• A drop off point for the share autos, autorickshaws etc., ( popular mode of transport
in Delhi ) must be included to reduce the Visitor traffic tension at the entrance.
3.Planning-
• No.of Toilets should be based on futuristic crowd expectations and not existing flow
rate.
• Check-in gates and Luggage-Trolley bay /Cloak rooms could be adjacent for better
circulation.
• Technical areas like Switchrooms etc., which is critically zoned, should be designed
properly such that passengers don't tresspass.
4.Structure-
• The Roof design materials(Openings) should
be designed properly such that it doesn't
affect the Escalators, Travelators etc.,
• The Use of Large volume of steel might
require extra caution to follow fire safety
standards.

5.Miscellenous-
• Although retail and Shopping amenities are
provided, better multi use spaces could be
provided for passegers who spend a brief
stay.
• The Volumetric design could have included
more green spaces in the platform for little
breathing spaces.
