In order for us to complete and produce a nice Investigatory Project, we would like to thank the

following:

 Almighty Father. He is the source of our strength and persistence. He help us and guide

us to accomplish it.

 Our ever supportive parents. With their source spiritual, mental, and emotional support. It

encourages us not to give up. Their financials and warm hearts are appreciated.

 To our friends. Without them this research study will not be done. Their suggestions also

motivated us to think best components.

 And lastly, our teachers whom we ask pieces of advice. We would also thank our subject

teacher, Mrs. Marie Fe G. Cainglit. She did not stop on challenging us and never leave

us. She also give suggestions that help us to choose the best way and things to add in our

product.
Chapter I

Introduction

A. Background of the Study

As of now our country is facing a great crisis in economy and products tend to have a

higher price. One of it is floor wax. Floor wax are known products that are frequently used by

people. These products are used to preserve and improved the conditions of the floor and making

it more presentable but the price is quite costly. Moreover, it has odorous smell.

Cellophane in addition is one of the most problematic waste on earth. As we know it is

having non-biodegradable nature which is a threat to earth. A plastic piece can take thousands of

years to dispose. Since it does not decompose easily, it is difficult to get rid of and cause harms

to animals that often end up eating the plastic and dying of chocking on its harmful chemicals. It

also causes blockages in the water resources which could lead to flood and other drastic

conditions. It is really annoying since they do not know what will be its effect in community

especially in cleanliness of the whole environment.

The use of cellophane is inevitable and already uncontrolled. This observation leads the

researchers to study cellophanes as an alternative source of floor wax and to make it more useful

after using. This research also aims to utilize cellophanes with low cost to help people lessen

their expenses with this product and used their money in more important necessities. This

research also helpful in maintaining the attractive look of society.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study seeks the possibility of cellophanes as an alternative source to floor wax. It sought

to answer the following questions:

1. Which among the different samples of floor wax yields the best quality in terms of:

a. Shininess

b. Smoothness

2. Is there a significant difference of cellophanes to commercial floor wax?

C. Statement of the Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant difference of cellophanes to commercial floor

wax.

D. Significance of the Study

Cellophanes on the environment are really quite devastating. Once it has been used, it

became trash which then ends up in the landfill or burned. Either solution is very poor on the

environment. With more than millions of plastic bag circulation annually this can lead to a

catastrophic littering problem. Not only a littering is unattractive but it is also a very serious

commercial hazard.

Thus the researchers want to study about cellophanes. They want to focus on its content

similar with commercial floor wax use. The researchers are hoping for this study to help

people lessen their expenses in floor wax and at the same time, to help our environment to

decreases the amount of wastes.

E. Scope and Delimitation

This study is only limited for the investigation of cellophanes used as alternative source

of floor wax making.

F. Definition of Terms

1. Cellophane- a thin transparent wrapping material made from viscose.

2. Floor wax- is a wax based-preparation used to finish and polish floors. It is meant to

increase hardness and glossiness in flooring and create resistance against slips and

scuff marks and includes ingredients like polymers emulsions, urethane and resins to

achieve this.

3. Candle- is an ignitable wick embedded in wax or another flammable solid substance.

4. Kerosene- It is obtained from petroleum and is used for burning kerosene lamps and

domestic heaters or furnaces.

Review of Related Literature

George (2012) claims that floor wax contains chemicals like nitrobenzene,

perchloroethylene, phenol, toluene and xylene.

Dunlap (1981) reported that most of the products of aniline and other substituted

nitrobenzene from nitrobenzene goes into the manufacture of various plastic monomers.

George (2012) reveals that plastic contains xylene. Xylene applications includes making

certain types of plastics and the manufacture of dyes, fibres, perfumes and films. The main end

user markets are petrochemical, printing, rubber leather, cleaning, plastics and pesticides

industries.

Katie (2018) states that most candles are made of paraffin wax which creates highly toxic

benzene and toluene when burned.

Thomas (2013) says that paraffin candles contain acetone, acrolem, chlorobenzene,

phenol, styrene, tetrachloroethene, toluene, trichloroethene and xylene.

Methodology

This chapter presents the materials and procedures needed in conducting the study

A. Materials

Cellophanes, Candle, and Kerosene,

B. Equipment

Casserole, Cloth ,Spoon, Stirring rod ,Scissors

C. Procedures

1. Cut the cellophanes into small pieces.

2. Melt the candle in the casserole

3. Mix the cut cellophanes and the melted candle. Stir it every three minutes.

4. Wait until the cellophanes melted.

5. Put down the casserole with melted cellophanes and melted candle.

6. Put 500 mL of kerosene in the casserole with melted cellophanes and candle.

7. Boil it within two minutes.

8. Put the materials in a clean cloth and squeeze it until extract liquid will come

out.

9. Add 5mL of kerosene in the extracted liquid and mix it vigorously.

10. Place the liquid material into container. Let it cool.

D. Research Environment

The study was conducted at Maddela Comprehensive High School every 2:00 to

4:00 in the afternoon since February 28, 2018 up to March 01, 2018.

E. Experimental Design

The experimental design used was the complete randomized design with three

treatments replicated two times.

Result and Discussion

This chapter presents the result and discussions regarding the significant differences of

combination of cellophanes, kerosene and candle from commercial floorwax.

The graph 1 shows that 71% of the respondents believed that cellophanes with kerosene

and candle is the most shiniest among the three treatments. Only 29% of the respondents
believed that cellophane with kerosene, candle and Junk food’s plastics is the shiniest and no one

believes that candle with kerosene is the shiniest.

The graph 2 shows that 59% of the respondents preferred that cellophanes with kerosene

and candle is the one that made the floor the smoothest texture among the three treatments. Only

41% of the respondents believed that cellophane with kerosene, candle and Junk food’s plastics

is the one that made the floor the smoothest texture and no one believed that candle and kerosene

can made the floor the smoothest texture.

The graph 3 shows that 71% of the respondents preferred that cellophanes with kerosene

and candle can be an alternative for commercial floor wax. Only 6% of the respondents believed

that cellophane with kerosene, candle and Junk food’s plastics and 23% believed that candle and

kerosene can .

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

Summary

This research project conducted to observed and utilized cellophanes. This

research is helpful in maintaining the attractive look of society. It found out that

cellophanes and commercial floor wax has no significant difference in terms of

shininess and smoothness. The researchers prepared three treatment namely: Floor

wax 1 (candle, kerosene, and cellophanes) , floor wax 2 (candle, kerosene,

cellophanes, and junk food’s plastics) , floor wax 3 (candle and kerosene). The

researchers drawn four boxes on the floor were the four treatments applied.

In this investigatory project, the researchers had gathered the following information:

1. This product is proven to be effective because it really makes the floor shine and

presentable.

2. The product is same from commercial floor wax due to some similarities of

materials used.

Conclusion

There is no significant difference between the qualities of the different samples in

terms of shininess and smoothness. This implies that as cellophanes increase, the

quality is still the same or doesn’t change. There is no significant difference between

quality of the different samples and the commercial product in terms of shininess and

smoothness. This implies that cellophane floor wax made has the same quality in
terms of shininess with the commercial product. Among the three treatments,

cellophanes with candle and kerosene is the best.

Recommendation

The researchers would like to recommend for next researchers as there things that

needed to be improved and further discussed.

1. Conduct similar study but using other resources.

2. Conduct similar study but make use of wood floor.
