THE SCHOOL’S LEARNING RESOURCE

CENTER
My learning Episode Overview
Episode I provides an opportunity for students to
examine a Learning Resource Center or Multi Media Center
and learn about its collection, services, equipment and reflect on how it supports the teaching
learning process.

My Intended Learning Outcomes

In this Episode, I must be able to:
 describe the goals of a Learning Resource / Multi-Media Center
 identify and classify resources that facilitate the teaching-learning processes.
 explain the services of the center that support learning.

My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following:

 quality of my observations and documentation.

 completeness and depth of analysis.
 depth and clarity of classroom observation-based reflection,
 time of submission of portfolio.

My Learning Essentials

1. A school usually sets up a center which will provide valuable support to the teaching-
learning process. Over the years the name of this center has evolved. Some of the
names are Audio-Visual Center, Media and Technology Department, or Simply
Learning Resource center.

2. With the very fast development of information and communication technology (ICT),
the natural outcome was the ever-expanding interface between the traditional library
and ICT both in terms of hardware and software systems and applications.

3. Schools may have different set-ups when it comes to a Learning Resource Center
(LRC). Some have replaced the term library with LRC. Some have a separate
library, LRC and Audio Visual or Media Center. Some just have the LRC both for
teachers and students.

4. The common purpose among these centers is to provide print, audio-visual and ICT
resources to support the teaching-learning process.

5. The goals of the Center may include, orienting and training teachers in the use of
audio visual and ICT resources, working with teachers and administrators in

producing instructional materials, making available useful resources to the students,
teachers and the school community.

6. In order to support the philosophy and aims of the school, the Center must fulfill the
following functions;
 Center of resources
 Laboratory of Learning
 Agent of teaching
 Service agency
 Coordinating agency
 Recreational reading center
 A link to other community resources

An Observation Guide for a LEARNING RESOURCE

Read the following statements carefully before you observe.

1. Go around the Learning Resource Center.

guidelines/procedures posted or available for the users to refer to?
5. Familiarize yourself with the guidelines and procedures. You may choose to
take photos of the center (if allowed).

My Analysis
Were the learning resources/materials arranged properly according to their functions and
characteristics?
The books inside the library were properly arranged as to their types and functions. The
proper arrangement of learning resources help the learners as well as the teachers to
easily locate their needs.
Do the guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials by the teachers?
Why? Why not?
The guidelines and procedures facilitate easy access to the materials is such a ways
that this guidelines do not involve great exertion or discomfort on the teachers or any
users of it.

What are the strengths of this Learning Resource Center?

Learning resource center can be developed to educate all people and provide quality
education that can be used in facing the 21 st century. The strengths of this LRC
depends on the people or person in charge were he/she knows efficiently on how to use
and facilitate it. The materials need to be sufficient enough to the population of the
school and must be always available if needs by the student or even the teachers. It
also to suit the latest trends in the society.
What are its weaknesses?
A learning resources center was only good as the resources. They have enough and the
person in charge in this LRC is insufficient and person in charge lacks the ideas and
knowledge in handling it, it will become their weaknesses and may cans a damage not
just to the materials but also to the users. For instance if they have the latest LRC but
no one knows how to manage it, it will be useless.
What suggestions can you make?
Suggest that the LRC must be well planned and properly managed by the person who is
capable of handling it and flexibility enough to handle changes especially in the
technology in order to manage properly the said resources that will benefit the school
teachers and the students. Learning resource center must be designed according to the
interest of the students so that their attention will be caught and it must be an
information provider to reinforce students learning.

My Reflection/ Insights

1. Which of the materials in the Learning Resource Center caught your

interest the most? Why?

The materials in the Learning Resource Center that really caught my

interest were the print materials like the books because they were
properly arranged according to their types and use. It seems that
there was a proper maintenance because most of the books were
free from dust.

2. Which gadgets/materials are you already confident to use/operate?

I’m confident to use the computer because I have one and I‘m using this when I’m
reporting and everyday use? I’m also confident to use the books, projector and
other materials that I really know how to operator because I’m very familiar with
it.

3. Which ones do you feel you need to learn more about?

I really want to know more about the use of PowerPoint presentation especially
the use of Excel and Hyperlink.

The Latest Software
While some districts may provide helpful curriculum tracking and organizing software,
teachers can always use a little something extra. No matter what the subject area, there
are a plethora of options available when it comes to software and apps.
Consider the following useful classroom apps:
Adobe Voice- This helpful tool allows users record themselves narrating a story to a
series of digital images, providing endless possibilities in the classroom.
Inspiration Apps- These brainstorming tools will help students scaffold and organize
their ideas in a meaningful context. It’s packed with templates and plenty of options for
sharing.
Explain Everything – This excellent tool for creating tutorials is perfect for giving
directions. Teachers say it support the learning process and is helpful for video,
presentations, annotating and more.
Class Dojo – This classroom management app promotes positive behavior and saves
precious time in the classroom by providing teachers with an easy way to record merits
and demerits. Furthermore, Class Dojo provides administrators and parents with instant
information about students’ progress and behavior in the classroom.
VideoScribe – This app allows students to create animated videos, replicating the
popular whiteboard-style tutorial. It has been praised for its ease-of-use and innovation.
