1. Consider an air-standard cycle for the turbojet power plant. The temperature and pressure of the air entering
the compressor are 1 bar and 303.15 K (30C). The pressure ratio in the compressor is 6.5, and the temperature
at the turbine inlet is 1373.15K (1100C). If expansion in the nozzle is isentropic and if the nozzle exhausts at 1
bar, what is the pressure at the nozzle inlet (turbine exhaust) and what is the velocity of the air leaving the
nozzle?
2. An air-standard Diesel cycle absorbs 1500 J/mol of heat. The pressure and temperature at the beginning of the
compression step are 1 bar and 293.15K (20C) and the pressure at the end of the compression step is 4 bar.
Assuming air to be an ideal gas for which Cp=(7/2)R and Cv=(5/2)R, what are the compression ratio and the
expansion ratio of the cycle?
3. The minimum pressure and temperature in an Otto cycle are 100 kPa and 27C. The amount of heat added to
the air per cycle is 1500 kJ/kg. (a) Determine the pressures and temperatures at all points of the air standard
Otto cycle. (b) Calculate the specific work and thermal efficiency of the cycle for a compression ratio of 8.
4. The volume ratios of compression and expansion for a diesel engine as measured from an indicator diagram
are 15.3 and 7.5 respectively. The pressure and temperature at the beginning of the compression are 1bar and
27C. Assuming an ideal engine, determine the mean effective pressure, the ratio of maximum pressure to
mean effective pressure and cycle efficiency.
5. In a gas turbine plant working on Brayton cycle, the air at inlet is 27C, 0.1 MPa. The pressure ratio is 6.25 and
the maximum temperature is 800C. The turbine and compressor efficiencies are each 80%. Find compressor
work, turbine work, heat supplied, cycle efficiency and turbine exhaust temperature. Mass of air may be
considered as 1 kg.
6. A turbojet engine inlets 70 kg/s of air at an altitude of 10 km while traveling at 300 m/s. The compressor
provides a pressure ratio of 9 and the turbine inlet temperature is 1000C. What is the maximum thrust and
horsepower that can be expected from this engine?
7. Find the back work ratio and the horsepower output of the cycle shown
