4. A municipal wastewater treatment plant discharges 1.2 m /s of effluent having a BOD of
60 mg/L. into a stream that has a flow of 9.3 m3/s and a BOD of its own equal to 6 mg/L.
Assuming Complete and instantneous mixing, estimate the BOD of the river just
downstream. 3

5. A wooden flume ( n= 0.012) with a rectanggular cross section is 2ft wide. The flume
carries 3ft3/s of water down at 1% slope. What is the depth of flow? 3

10. Discuss the factors affecting bearing capacity of a shallow foundation 3

11. Percentage voids of a soil sample if 50, If the specific gravity of soil solids is 2.70,
Calculated the submerge unit weight of the soil sample. 3

12. In an unconfined compression test a sample of sandy clay 8 cm long and 4 cm diameter
fail at the load of 12 kg and 7% strain. Compute the undrained shear strength of sandy
clay taking into account the effect of change in cross section of the sample. 3

13. To cast a 40 ft long concrete beam of 12 inch by 15 inch cross section, find the number
of bags of cement necessary if the concrete is mixed at a ratio of 1:2:4 by volume. 3

14. Concrete pile of 24” diameter embedded in clay. Unconfined compressive strength of the
soil is in lab is 4.0 ksf. The embedded length of the pile is 30ft. Calculate ultimate load
bearing capacity of pile. Adhesion factor between clay and pile is 0.45. Unit weight of the
