WHAT IS STEAM JET EJECTOR??
An ejector is a type of vacuum pump or compressor. Since an ejector has
no specific moving parts it is a low cost and low maintenance device
used to compress gases, create vacuum and to transport granular solids to
mix liquids or gases.
Generally the motive fluid is steam so we also called them Steam Jet
Ejector.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
An ejector works on the Bernoulli’s principle i.e ‘When the speed of
fluid increases its pressure decreases and vice-versa’.
In a steam jet ejector, the suction chamber is connected to the vessel or
pipeline that is to be evaluated under vacuum. The gas that is to be
induced into the suction chamber can be any fluid that is compatible with
the steam and the component’s materials of construction.
The steam nozzle discharge a high velocity jet across the suction
chamber. The steam jet creates a vacuum which extracts air or gas from
the adjoining vessel. As these gases are entrained in the steam, the
mixture travels through the ejector into a venturi-shaped diffuser. In the
diffuser, its velocity energy is converted into pressure energy, which
helps to discharge the mixture against a predetermined back pressure,
either to atmosphere or to a condenser.
BERNOULLI’S THEOREM APPLICATION

When fluid flow through pipe it has a specific rate of flow which can
be identified by the equation of continuity :-
P1v1A1 = p2v2A2
P1 = pressure in Area1 ; v1 =velocity of fluid in part1 P2 =
pressure in Area2 ; v2 =velocity of fluid in Area2
P2 < P1 & P2 < Patm This low pressure area inside the suction
chamber forces the fluid in the vessel to enter the chamber.
Using Energy and mass balanve we finally get Bernoulli’s equation
which is defined as :-
pv 2
+ pgz + P=Constant
2

This explains decrease in pressure due to increase in velocity.

SINGLE STAGE EJECTOR

Single stage ejector are simple ejectors which are commonly used in
industry. They are generally recommended for pressure from atm to
3Hg.

MULTI-STAGE EJECTOR
Since the capacity of a single ejector is fixed by its dimensions, a
single unit has practical limit on the total compression. For greater
compression, two or more ejectors can be arranged in series. In a
Multi-stage Ejector system, condensers are typically used between
successive ejectors. By condensing the vapors before sending the
stream on the next stage, the vapour load is reduced.

MULTI-STAGE EJECTOR – WITH INTER-

CONDENSER
Intercondensers are used between successive ejector stages in a Multi-
stage ejector system to reduce the vapour load on the succeeding
stages. A typical system of steam jet ejector uses a direct-contact
condenser or a surface condenser, typically a shell-and-tube heat
exchanger.
For optimal performance, direct-contact condenser must be installed
upright and plumb. Shell-and-tube surface condensers may be
installed either vertically or horizontally. The vapours to be
condensed can be routed through either the inside or the outside of the
tubes.
The condenser must be installed to allow for complete condensate
drainage. Mounting arrangements should take into account the weight
of the condenser when it is fully flooded.

OPERATING CHALLENGES
Although the steam jet ejectors provide extremely reliable
performance but they do require periodic maintenance to ensure the
smooth working of systems.
The major reasons for its decrease in optimal performance are due to
the improper utilities, fouled condensers, mechanical damage,
excessive process load, excessive non-condensable load or improper
installation.
