Cursor A cursor is an indicator used to show the current position for


user interaction on a computer monitor or other display device
that will respond to input from a text input or pointing device. 

Desktop The working area of a computer screen regarded as a


representation of a notional desktop and containing icons
representing items such as files and a wastebasket.

Drive A drive is a computer component used to store data

Monitor A monitor is an output device that displays information in


pictorial form.

CPU It is a principal part of any digital computer system, generally


composed of the main memory, control unit, and arithmetic-
logic unit.

Hard drive A hard drive is the hardware component that stores all of your
digital content.

CD-ROM It is the abbreviation of compact disc read-only memory. It is a


type of computer memory in the form of a compact disc that is
read by optical means.

Hardware It is the physical components that a computer system requires


to function.

Floppy drive & floppy A floppy drive iseused for reading and writing on
disk removable floppy disks. A floppy disk is a type of disk storage
composed of a thin and flexible disk of a magnetic storage
medium in a square or nearly square plastic enclosure lined
with a fabric that removes dust particles from the spinning
disk.
Gig Short for gigabyte, it is often used to measure storage
capacity. One gigabyte is equal to 1,000 megabytes or
1,000,000 bytes.

Icons An icon on your computer screen represents an object or a


program on your hard drive.

Window A window is a graphical control element. It consists of a visual


area containing some of the graphical user interface of the
program it belongs to and is framed by a window decoration.

peripherals A peripheral is ancillary device used to put information into


and get information out of the computer.

Keyboard symbols: Describe the functions of each keyboard symbols

Alt A computer key that you press together with another key so
that the other key does something different from what it usually
does.

Arrows One of four computer keys marked with an up, down, left, or
right arrow, used for moving the cursor.

Backspace The key that you press on a keyboard to move one space
backwards in a document.

Caps lock A key on a computer keyboard that makes all the keys
produce capital letters.

Control A key on a computer keyboard that is used in combination


with other keys for doing particular operations.

Delete A computer key that removes characters.

End Upon pressing, you will be brought to the end of your


document.

Enter A key on a computer keyboard that makes the computer


perform an action or start a new line of writing.

Escape A key on a computer keyboard that allows someone to stop an


action, leave a program, or return to a previous menu.

Function keys A special button on a computer keyboard that is used for a


particular operation in a program. The keys near the top of a
keyboard marked ‘F1’ to ‘F12’ are function keys.

Tab Computing a button on a computer keyboard or typewriter that


you press to move several spaces along the same line.

Home It returns the cursor to the beginning of the line in editable


text, and otherwise scrolls a scrollable document to the
beginning.

Insert It is primarily used to switch between the two text-entering


modes on a personal computer (PC) or word processor:
overtype mode, in which the cursor, when typing, overwrites
any text that is present in the current location.

Numeric keypad The part of a computer keyboard to the right of the main keys
that has keys with numbers on them.

Minus It can be a dash in text but when used in excel, it does the
subtraction.

Num Lock A computer key that you press to make the number keys
below it enter numbers and not be used for moving up and
down a document.

Page down It is used to scroll down.

Page up It is used to scroll up.


Pause The Pause key is designed to pause a text-mode program's
output.

Space bar The long narrow bar at the front of a computer keyboard that
you press to make a space between words when you are
typing.

Slash When used in excel, this key does the division.

Shift The key that you press on a computer keyboard when you
want to write a capital letter.

Scroll lock It can be a lock key on some programs and a second function
on another key.

Print screen It captures your screen as it is and turn it into a photo.
