QUESTION:
The nurse on the day shift is assigned to care for three patients. One patient has a
tracheostomy and is on a mechanical ventilator. Another patient is scheduled for a cardiac
catheterization at 10am, and the other patient was newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
and is scheduled for discharge to home.

Following report from the night shift how does the nurse prioritize her work. Provide
rational.

ANSWER
Airway is always a high priority, therefore and the nurse would assess the patient who has
a tracheostomy and is on a mechanical ventilator first. Next, the nurse would assess the
patient who is scheduled for the cardiac catheterization. In the last, the nurse will follow
the patient who is scheduled for discharge.
