ASSIGNMENT 2 SIM 3251 (DUE DATE: 22/5/2020) Chapter 3, 4 & 5
CHAPTER 3, 4 & 5
1. A computer system uses passwords of five characters, each character being one of the 26
letters (a-z) or 10 integers (0-9). The first character has to be a letter. Determine the
proportion of passwords that
a) begin with a consonant;
b) end with an even number (0,2,4,6,8); and
c) begin with a consonant or ends with an even number.
You may assume that passwords are not case sensitive.
3. A normal random variable x has mean 35 and standard deviation 10. Find a value of x that
has area 0.01 to its right.
4. Consider a binomial experiment with n = 20 and p = 0.4. Calculate P(x ≥ 10) using each of
these methods:
a) Using cumulative binomial probabilities table
5. Random samples of size n were selected from populations with the means and variances
given here. Find the mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample
mean in each case:
a)
b)
c)

d) If the sampled populations are normal, what is the sampling distributions of for
parts a, b, and c? What if the sampled populations are not normal?

7. Refer to the Question 3. What is the effect of increasing the sample size on the
standard error?
8. Suppose the distribution of human body temperatures are derived with a distinct
mound shape. The temperature of healthy humans is assumed to be approximately
normal with a mean of 98.6 degrees and a standard deviation of 0.8 degrees.
a) If 150 healthy people are selected at random, what is the probability that the
average temperature for these people is lower than 98.35 degrees?
b) Would you consider an average temperature of 98.35 degrees to be an
unlikely occurrence, given that the true average temperature of healthy people
is 98.6 degrees? Explain.
9. Random samples of size n=500 were selected from a binomial population with p=0.1.
a) Is it appropriate to use the normal distribution to approximate the sampling
distribution of ? Check to make sure the necessary conditions are met.
b)
c)
