Reflection: POWDERS, BOTH ARE MIXED.

• What have you learned from the activity?

Today, I have learned how to be able to crush Paracetamol with what I have, basically,
and that I am able to learn how to produce a division of a powdered paracetamol as a
method of drug compounding.

THE MIXED POWDER IS THEN DIVIDED INTO FIVE

• Based on the discussion, what specific topic will surely be useful on your future
chosen career?
It is very essential to me, first and foremost, to be able to crush the Paracetamol, or any
other drugs that are in a tablet dosage form, as some may be hard to crush, while there are
some that can be crushed easily. It is also important to be able to completely make them
look like as if they were powders before mixing them with lactose.

• How will this benefit you as future pharmacist?

This drug preparation is beneficial to me, as most of our population take antipyretics like
paracetamol. It is essential that by compounding a powdered form of these, the efficacy
must be maintained even after being administered their users.

POST-LAB QUESTIONS

1. Give examples of apparatus/equipment used in the laboratory.

a. SPATULA – used for scraping, transferring, or applying powders and pastes

b. PILL TILE – used for placing and rolling solid dosage forms like tablets and pills.
c. MORTAR AND PESTLE – a pair used for crushing and grinding solid dosage forms into

fine powders or granules

2. What is the definition of powders based on USP?

- In compounding, "powder" refers to a dosage formulation that is solid in physical state. But
the formulation may be composed of only the active drug or may be a mixture of the active
drug and other ingredients.

3. What are the types of paper intended to be use in the preparation of divided powders?

- Glassine, vegetable parchment, waxed, bond paper

4. Give the advantage and disadvantage of powders.

• ADVANTAGES

a. each dose can contain a different amount of active drug

b. can be administered easily to infants and young children who cannot swallow tablets or
capsules
c. drug will have a rapid onset of action since disintegration is not required
d. can be applied to many body cavities such as ears, nose, tooth socket, throat
e. drugs tend to most stable as a solid
f. can be made into many different dosage formulations (capsules, tablets, powders for
reconstitution, dusting powders, bulk powders, powders for inhalation, etc.)

• DISADVANTAGES

a. As compared to other dosage forms, powders are time consuming to compound.

b. Volatile, hygroscopic, oxidizing and deliquescent drugs create obvious difficulties when
dispensed as powders.
c. Dose inaccuracy.
