Local Theater and Foreign Theater
Theater, like all performing arts, takes place in time as well as space. The relationship
between theatre, film and television is very apparent. Theater is different from all other forms of
theatrical presentation because it is live. At the heart of the theater experience is the performer –
audience relationship: the immediate, personal exchange whose chemistry and magic give theatre
its special quality.
Theater in the Philippines is different from that of the foreign theaters. Filipino theater
was influenced greatly by the colonization of Spaniards, Americans and Japanese. During the
pre-colonial times, theater in the Philippines was in the form of indigenous rituals, verbal games,
or song or dances to praise gods and goddesses and more about myths. Throughout the 333 years
of Spanish regime, the Philippines was influenced by their culture, tradition and religion that
affect the usual primitive way of Filipino theater.
Philippine theater today has evolved because of various influences from the colonizers.
Plays such as zarzuela, comedia, bodabil and western classics are performed today. Through the
years, Philippine theatre groups have staged numerous plays in both English and Filipino, be it
written by a Western or local playwright. Spanish culture and traditions largely influence
performing arts in the Philippines, but the contemporary style is borrowed from the Americans.
Foreign theaters on the other hand, are on a different level. Their scope are wide while
Philippine theater mainly focuses more on the plays during the Spanish time. Also, foreign
theaters are more widely known to the public that’s why it is being supported and acknowledge
by everyone meanwhile most of the Filipinos don’t appreciate theater. Saying it’s boring and
flat. Philippines focuses more on mainstream and indie films. Theaters are hardly known to the
public. Theaters are usually held when there is an occasion such as Holy Week. In the Foreign
theaters, because of wide scope of concepts for theaters, it is held throughout the year and is
making profit because it is being advertised.
