increasingly popular during the Romantic

How did opera differ from a drama? Opera differ from drama in a way that in an
opera the dialogue between the actors is sung
while in a drama the dialogue is spoken.

B. Establishing a Purpose

This time, I want you to pay attention and look closely on
the slideshow presentation that I am going to present.

What is in the third picture? The first picture is all about Miles Gloriosus.

Who is the author of Miles Gloriosus? It was written by Plautus.

Those three pictures are examples of dramas from the


three different ancient civilizations, the Renaissance, the (Students listen attentively.)
Greek and the Roman.
D. Discussion of New Concept and Skills#1
This morning class, we will be focusing on the two
Western Classical Play and Opera which is Greek
Theater and Roman Theater. But before that, let us define
theater.

What is a theater? Theater is a collaborative form of fine arts that


uses live performance, typically actors or
actresses, to present the experienced of real or
imagined event in a specific place on stage.

In other words, dramatic arts concerned with live


performances in which the action is precisely planned to
create a coherent and significant sense of drama.
Theater comes from the ancient Greek word
“theatron” which means a place for viewing
and “theaomai” which means to see, to watch
or observe.

Theatre buildings were called theatron.


E. Continuation of the Discussion
This time, I will provide each group with hand-outs
cartolina and pen.
In five minutes, you have to discuss within your group the
topic that I assigned to you. Please answer the guide
questions. Write your answer on the piece of cartolina
that I provide. Post your output on the board and be
ready to share the topic that you had discussed.
Group 1 Discussion: Greek Theater European
theater began in Ancient Greece. It began
around 700 B.C. with festivals honoring their
many gods. One god, Dionysus, with a
religious festival called, ―The Cult of
Dionysus‖, to honor Dionysus (Di-on-i-sus), the
god of wine and fertility. The city-state of
Athens was the center of a significant cultural,
political, and military power during this
period, where the festivals and competitions
were usually performed.
Guide Questions:
How did Greek Theater began?

Answer: The Greek theater began with festivals


honoring their Gods.
What are the three types of Greek drama?
Answer: Tragedy, Comedy and Satyr Play

Gourp 2 Discussion: The actors, directors, and


(Teacher facilitates the learners) dramatists were all the same person. After
some time, only three actors were allowed to
perform in each play. Due to limited number of
actors allowed on-stage, the chorus played into
a very active part of Greek theatre. Music was
often played during the chorus. Men performed
songs to welcome Dionysus and women were
not allowed to perform. Competitions in song,
dance, music, scenic representation and bodily
exercises were done during the festivals.

Group 3 DIscussion: Roman Theater. The


theatre of ancient Rome started in the 3rd
century BC. It had varied and interesting art
forms, like festival performances of street
theatre, acrobatics, the staging of comedies of
Plautus, and the high-verbally elaborate
tragedies of Seneca.

Guide Questions:
When did the theater of ancient Rome started?
Answer: 3RD Century B.C.

What are the themes of usual Roman theater


plays?
Answer: Chariots races and public execution

We Filipinos, was once colonized by the Spaniards that’s


why we have our own version of dramatic plays and
opera. The most commonly known is the Philippine
Zarzuela.

F. Developing Mastery
Now, class, I want you to listen attentively. Raise your

the society? Dramatic play serves as a way of
entertainment.

their point of view.)

G. Finding Practical Application


I will assign a scene on each group based on the Roman
Dramatic Play “Miles Gloriosus” and Greek Dramatic
Play “Oedipus Rex”. All you have to do is create a script
based on the scene that I give to you and dramatized it in
front. I’ll give you 5 minutes to practice.
