Reboot –Rework- Recast:

Mission Zero Waste
Indian Foundries of today face several challenges such as increasing production
costs, raw material shortages, pricing issues, environmental compliances,
skilling and manpower deficits, international competition & technological
up-gradation. Each of these challenges need to be seen as opportunities to
improve by rebooting- going right back to the drawing board, reworking- to
adapt to the change and recasting, augmented by disruptive technologies like
IOT, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, 3D Printing, Block Chain Technologies,
Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy etc., thereby opening up of a whole new
vista of possibilities that ensure zero waste across the industry.
The COVID-19 pandemic with its impact on lives and livelihood has spared no
industrial sector including Foundries making it all the more necessary for Foundries
and Foundrymen to reinvent themselves. Natures Rule is – Adopt & Adapt to
Survive. Wherever there is crisis, there is also new window of opportunity. In the
present neo normal, Foundries should grab the emerging opportunities and make
the most of the situation. Foundries need to resort to Introspection or Reboot,
followed by Course Correction or Rework and finally Implementation or Recast
which would lead to Mission Zero Waste of scarce Opportunities & Resources.
The role of IIF at this juncture is to provide every support to its members to not
only survive and stabilize but also successfully enable retaining of the position
as the second largest producer of Castings worldwide.

Annual Report to the members

Respected Member,

I am pleased to present the Annual Report of our Institute for 2019-20.

The IIF through its National Council, Regional Offices, Chapters, and National Committees & Task
Forces has made a host of wide ranging decisions during the year which have been executed by the
Secretariat and Centres of Excellence for the benefit and betterment of foundry fraternity.

This would not have been possible without unstinted cooperation of our members some of whom
have selflessly served the Institute in various capacities.

There are others unnamed who have silently lent a helping hand of support to activities and pro-
grammes of the Institute and have willingly walked the extra mile for furthering the cause of IIF
and foundry fraternity.

I would like to express profound gratitude to all our members for their active participation, unbridled
encouragement and resolute support throughout the year and envisage the same for next year.

The result of management decisions, executive actions and outcomes have been enumerated in
the Annual Report as follows:

Topic: Present challenges and the way forward for The Indian Foundry Industry
Date: 9th June, 2020
In the course of IIF’s efforts to reach out to members and Foundrymen in order to generate interaction on various
Foundry issues, in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic led to The IIF inviting Honorable Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari,
Minister for MSME, Road Transport and Highways & Shipping, to address the Foundry fraternity.
The Webinar witnessed record attendance of 900+. IIF keeping in view the pandemic strategized the 3S formula
– Survive, Stabilize & Succeed and presented a charter to the Honourable Minister.

Highlighted Areas
w Domestic v. International Market
w Challenges faced by the Industry
w Export opportunities for Castings Industry
w IIF’s recommendations to the Govt. on Exports

President mentioned that if manufacturing in India has to grow by 10%, the Indian Foundry Industry needs to
grow by 7.5%. He requested for financial support and stepped up interest system for the industry, rationalizing of
power tariff (incl. night charge), custom duty of 20% for casting imports and a nodal ministry for Castings Industry
preferably under Ministry of MSME.
Minister in his response said Indian Foundries should look forward to taking advantage of the present export climate
and export concessions and exemptions as well as work on reducing the cost components. He invited Foundries
to be part of new clusters being set up on the side of highways and said the Govt. is open to joint venture with
associations. He urged Foundries to register under MSME to avail of the benefits. He made special emphasis on
conversion of knowledge into wealth by industries.
President thanked Shri Nitin Gadkari for his kind observations. The Minister also had a brief interactive session and answered
a queries from the participants. Vice-President Mr. Vijay Beriwal proposed the formal vote of thanks at the end of the session.

Lifetime Achievement Award
This citation recogizes Shri. S. Thiagharajan for his yeoman contibution in the field of
Ductile Iron. His innovative and visionar leadership in the ductile iron foundr has put the
Indian ductile iron foundr indust on the global map.
A Mechanical Engineering Graduate from the illustious Madras Universit, he ventred
into entepreneurship when ductile iron was just in its nascent stage. He had the vision to
forecast ductile iron as the ftre engineering casting and stared M/s. Souther Alloy
Foundries in 1959, a ver bold ventre by any standards at that stage.
His thirst for knowledge and development of ductile iron took him to various counties like
Japan, Russia (the then USSR), Italy, UK and USA.
He has addressed many technical instittions and presented papers on ductile iron in
various forms in India and abroad.
As an ardent advocate of bringing together Foundren, he took an active par in the
Institte of Indian Foundren. His contibutions led to him being honoured as the President
of the Institte of Foundren in 1977. He held the post till 1979.
He is rightly called the “FATHER OF DUCTILE IRON” among the Foundr fraterit.
His interest did not end with engineering. His spirital acumen led him to Philosophy and
Tamil devotional literatre.
He specialized in Thevaram and Thirmandiram. He was the President of the Saiva
Siddhanta Permanram for 8 years.
Dharapura Adheenam confered on him the title Thirmurai Selvar.
He has presented papers on Tamil Devotional Philosophy in Interational conferences.
The Institte of Indian Foundren considers it an honour to present the LIFETIME
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD to SHRI. S. THIAGHARAJAN, the Doyen of ductile iron in India.

Thank You
To the entire Fraternity of Foundrymen

We, the Foundrymen had a dream

w A dream of a stronger Indian economy
w A dream of a resurgent Foundry industry
w A dream of rejuvenated IIF enabling and catering to both
The COVID-19 pandemic has severely dented these dreams but has also opened up new
vistas to achieve them, whether uncharted or not emphasized hereinbefore.
We need undertake a PARDIGM SHIFT – to think and work differently.
With changing times and technology, we have to reinvent ourselves, go back to drawing
board – REBOOT; identify new ways and means to achieve the old targets – REWORK
and simply implement the same -RECAST to achieve zero waste.
Already I see, new hopes, new beginnings, new stars on the horizon coming forth, to shine
brilliantly in times to come.
We have been doing it together and we shall not stop until we reach our goal.
SURVIVE we will
STABILIZE we must
SUCCEED as never before
Let us all take a pledge to take the Foundry fraternity to newer heights.
Thank You for Your Courage
Thank You for Your Cooperation
Thank You for Your Support
Thank you for willing to walk the Extra Mile with me.
Farewell my friends! – As they say ADIEU – Until we meet again.

Yours in eternity
Sanjay Shroff
