Course Description

The course will introduce language and cultural features of Korea through interactive
and communicative learning methods with task-based teaching which will help
maximize students’ interest and achievement in learning.

Aims

The main aims of this course are to:

 help achieve basic communication ability with a new language in common social
life
 encourage students to explore a new culture with a new language and help equip
them with self-motivation and self-confidence
 enhance students’ interest in a new culture and language for their development

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the KOR1102 course, students will be able to:

1. understand the relations between phonological features and typology of


Korean and develop their knowledge of this as a language based on
phonology which can be adjusted to the writing system
2. use counting units for various items and expressions of time and location
3. use appropriate case particles according to their grammatical features in
sentences
4. communicate at an introductory level of spoken and written language with
cultural awareness in everyday life

Indicative Content

The contents covered in this course are practical for daily life. The textbook has 9
topics such as greetings, time, restaurant, phone etc. Students will learn these
necessary expressions for basic communication in daily life and develop an
understanding of Korean culture via various activities and additional course materials
which motivate them and facilitate their learning Korean and understanding its
culture effectively.

Language and cultural content of the course will include:


 basic grammar features, speech patterns and vocabulary required to
converse on such topics as home, family, friends, city, food, shopping, daily
routine, etc.
 various activities, pair work, role-play and interview to help students’
speaking skills
 listening CD and checking questionnaires for listening skills
 reading text with summarization work
 vocabulary dictation quizzes at the end of each unit for students’ vocabulary
building
 short essays with topics given in the textbook and a free topic approved by
the instructor for writing skills
 cultural introduction using video clips and discussion for differences and
similarities between Chinese and Korean culture

Teaching Method

An activity-based teaching method will be used for introducing this new language
encouraging students’ participation with their interests. The various types of
activities will be given as pair work and group work as well to try to maximize the
opportunities for students’ practice in listening, reading, reading and writing in class.

The assessment is 100% by continuous assessment. The course will be awarded on


the regular grading system (A to F). Components of assessments include:

Important Notes:
(1) Students are expected to spend a total of 9 hours (i.e. 3 hours of class contact and
6 hours of personal study) per week to achieve the course learning outcomes.
