Alapvetően nem volt előadó, és tök kevesen voltunk, ezért Otti egy saját régebbi előadását

 product of evolution through natural selection
 can be big (birds, spiders, humans…) or relatively small (snakes, geese, ), or they can all
be the same like snails and other (hímnősek?)
 runaway selection: extreme, not the best for survival, but impresses the other sex (male
peacocks’ feathers, some antlers…)
differences:
Appearance: primary and secondary sexual characteristics
 genitals,
 body mass
 muscle-fat ratio, and where fat is placed (hips&breasts/stomach&insides)
 body hair (males have stronger)
 hip’s shape
 fingertips- there are characteristic female and male fingerprints
 bone shapes
 …
Psychological:
Males:
 more prone to developmental disorders (autism, dyslexia)
 more likely to suffer from schizophrenia & Parkinson’s disease, and their conditions are
usually more serious
Females:
 more likely to suffer from anorexia & depression
Some examples on sexual dimorphism:
 humans: medium difference
 birds: big diff.
 hyena: females are bigger, more muscular, and have fake penises to scare off everyone
 sea-devil: males are really small and live as parasites on the females body, finally they
degenerate (Otti szerint az egyetlen örökké tartó házasság… nem mertünk rákérdezni.)
 sea lions: big fat males have a harem of smaller females

Looking at sexual dimorphism we can tell is the species have monogamy or polygamy:
Small dimorphism is linked to monogamy, the testicles are small, as the male has only one
female companion
Big dimorphism is linked to polygamy, the testicles are bigger as males have a lot of females.

There are also differences in the ovum and the sperms (size, movements, numbers…)

What makes one’s biological sex?


In some species, temperature and other environmental factors play a big role (crocodiles,
turtles…)
In humans, it’s the chromosomes:
XX is the typical female and XY is the male.
The Y chromosome contains the sex-determining region (SRY), which encodes testicles by TDF
factor. (nembiztos hogy pont így, ilyen egyszerűen, de ezt a részt nagyon átugrottuk mivel nem
biológusok vagyunk.)
 female differentiation is default, to become male, you need to have Y to have these factors
and hormones, so was Adam really first? (Otti is egy harci feminista, mit kiderült)
Even without ovaries and testicles the baby will still be born a girl due to mother’s hormones.
If there’s a problem with the male hormones, female differentiation occurs.
Intersex: discrepancy in internal & external genitals

 X0: Turner’s syndrome: biological female, has no secondary sex characteristics, has no
ovulation
 XXY: Klinefelter’s syndrome: biological male, really feminine men, often raised as
women
 XXX: Metafemale, biological female, really masculine women
 XYY: no official name, “Supermale”, biologically male, has high testosterone level, low
IQ, is undersocialised, often tall and very physical
 5-alpha reductase deficiency (5-ARD), Androgen insensitivity disorder: until puberty,
children are raised as girls, then they change and live as men. This is considered normal,
because most people in their tribe have this disease.
 Congenital adrenal hyperplasia: genetical females who have too much male hormones,
and are raised as men.
Conclusions:
Whithout DNA tests we can’t know one’s sex for sure.
A ton of things have to be perfect to produce a typical XY male or XX female.
