"To Sir, with love"

E.R. Braithwaite was born in 1912 in British Guiana. Eustace Braithwaite is well-
known as a novelist, writer, teacher, and diplomatist. After World War II he took
up a job as a schoolteacher in the East End of London. The book To Sir, With
Love (1959) was based on his experiences there. Braithwaite’s novel is a positive
example of educational methodology, and the human connection needed between
teacher and student. The other famous works are A Kind of Homecoming, Paid
Servant, A Choice of Straws, Reluctant Neighbours.
This is a story about a teacher's experience with students. It is a 1st-person
narration with descriptive passages. The main character tried to make a good
impression on the students. But he practically did not succeed. The children were
not interested in his lesson. At the end of the story, one of the students interrupted
the lesson, knocking the table top, began to swear and misbehave. As a result, the
main character was so overwhelmed with indignation that he completely lost his
composure, but later wondered what to do next, sitting in the school library. The
final is open in text. We can only guess how this story ended. Did the teacher deal
with this problem? Did he manage to get closer to them?
In my opinion, the main problem and idea of the text is the complexity of the
relationship between the student and the teacher through personal understanding of
each other. Each teacher must find his own path, his own approach to students,
because learning is not an easy process.
This text can be divided into the following parts. In the first part, the advantages of
the principal’s pet schemes were described. The second part tells about the
introduction to the class. The climax of this passage is the third part of the text.
The students deliberately interrupted classes and swore at every opportunity. The
last part is the denouement of this text. The teacher sat in the library and was
saddened and thoughtful: « I felt sick at heart, because it seem ed that this latest
act, above all others, was intend ed to display their utter disrespect for me.»
The mood of the story is tense. The author uses a variety of lexical and stylistic
techniques. To describe the director's program, our narrator uses a metaphor such
as “pet scheme”. Other metaphors were presented : remote( the author used this
metaphor to portray the attitude of the students), a conspiracy of indifference. The
author also uses epithets such as uninterested, burning anger. To make the story
brighter and more complete, the author uses phraseological units :to take some
pains, antithesis :careful – careless; individual – collective, opposites :mixture of
a relief and disappointment.
Summing up, it is worth saying that these days this problem is very urgent. The
idea of the story being analyzed is this: you cannot lead children using only love or

strength, you need to use all your talents and skills so that children respond and
show interest. It takes a lot of patience and strong will.
