Cereal Box Theatre Project
OBJECTIVE: To create a proscenium stage to demonstrate knowledge of the parts and areas of a
proscenium stage.
1. Measure 1 ½” or 1 “ (depending on how big your boxes are) around two sides and the top of
the cereal box and draw a line on the box.
A. Using scissors carefully cut along the lines you drew to cut an opening in
the cereal box.
B. DO NOT CUT THE BOTTOM OF THE FLAP OFF THE BOX.
C. Fold the flap down to form the apron of the stage.
2. Draw on the flap to make an apron.
A. The apron may be rectangular or circular.
B. Carefully cut the apron from the tab on the box.
3. Measure 1 ½” around the other side of the cereal box and cut an opening on the other side of
the cereal box.
A. This tab will make the stage floor of your theatre.
4. Design a proscenium: color, cut out, and glue the pieces to the front of the cereal box.
1. Measure 1 ½” or 1 “ (depending on how big your boxes are) around two sides and
the top of the cereal box and draw a line on the box.
A. Using scissors carefully cut along the lines you drew to cut an opening in
the cereal box for the cereal box.
B. DO NOT CUT THE BOTTOM OF THE FLAP OFF THE BOX.
C. Fold the flap down to form the fly space/roof of your theatre.
2. Make a backdrop for your theatre.
A. Choose one of the backdrops choices and color or design your own
backdrop for your stage.
B. After finishing the backdrop, glue it to the back of the cereal box.
3. Make one set of curtains to hang from the fly space at center stage (CS) on both
the SR and SL side of the stage model out of construction paper.
A. Attach the curtains to the fly space (top of the cereal box) with glue.
Before attaching the two cereal boxes together, draw and label the following areas on the
theatre model. Note most of this is going to go on cereal box #1, creating the stage floor.
● Apron
● 9 areas of the stage (use your notes in your journal if you need help).
● Upstage
● Downstage
● Onstage
● Offstage
● Backstage
FINAL STEPS
● Carefully use hot glue to attach the two pieces of the stage model together.
● Decorate the top and sides of your proscenium stage model with construction
paper.
● Put the finishing touches on your proscenium stage model as a group.
● Write all of your group names on your model (first and last) and the period.
● When your group is done, bring your finished stage to the teacher for a group
grade.
