1. How did the pamphlet help you understand the controversy on the first Catholic
Mass in the Philippines? Answer briefly.
On March 31, 1521, an Eastern Sunday, Magellan ordered a Mass to be
celebrated which was officiated by father Pedro Velderrama, the Andalusion
chaplain of the fleet, The only priest then. Its controversy has a huge impact on
our country which is the Philippines because it has molded the identity of the
Filipinos. Being a Catholic is one of the culture of a Filipino.
2. Which side did you mostly agree on, and why did you agree? Give a brief answer.
I agree that Magellan ordered a mass to be celebrated which was the first Catholic mass
in the Philippines, because it was the first mass that gives birth on Roman Catholic
religion in the Philippines and it was the one who introduces the Philippines religion.
ASSESSMENT PART 4
POSITION PAPER ABOUT THE FIRST MASS IN THE PHILIPPINES
In the year 1521 the Philippines was just another young country that began to establish its
identity when Ferdinand Magellan, a trespasser from Portugal, show up during the mercenary
and competition against the spies he sailed with some men for the expedition to search for raw
ingredients.
There is a controversy regarding the site of the first mass ever celebrated on island called
“Mazaua.” Two native chieftains were in attendance: the rajah of Mazaua and the rajah of
Butuan. After the Mass the party went up a little hill and planted and planted a wooden cross
upon its summit. The subject of controversy is the identity of this place which Pigafetta calls
“Mazaua.”
There are two conflicting claims as to its identity: one school of thoughts points to the little
island south of Leyte which in the maps is called Limasawa , the other school reject that claim
and points instead to the beach called Masao at the mouth of Agusan River in northern
Mindanao, near what was then the village of Butuan.
LESSON 2
TITLE: THE CAVITE MUTINY OF 1872
ANALYSIS:
After reading the three different versions of Cavite Munity, write your
reaction/comment/opinion for each version or account on the box. Write it in bullet form. At
least 5 reaction/comment/opinion per account will do.
Pick an account which you think is the most reliable among the three versions of the
Cavite Mutiny and write an argumentative essay on why you picked the account. Below
is the rubrics that will serve as your guide in writing the essay (at least 300 words).
Cavite Mutiny brief uprising of 200 Filipino troops and workers at the Cavite arsenal,
which became the excuse for Spanish authorities served ultimately to promote the
nationalist cause.
According to Dr. Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera, this was merely a mutiny of native Filipino
soldiers and laborers Of Cavite arsenal against the harsh policy of despotic governor and
captain-general Rafael de Izquierdo which abolished their old time privileges of
exemption from paying the annual tribute and from rendering forced labor. Filipinos had
great hopes of an improvement in the affairs of their country. The loss of privileges
resented by the soldiers and laborers was the primary cause of the revolt
I chose the Filipino Version of Cavite Mutiny, because I think that the most credible
versions of the Cavite Mutiny is the Filipino version because as a Filipino, I believe in my
own country men and I think that the Spaniards oppressed the Filipino because they have
the power and capability to do that at that time.
