The Story of William Tell- Prose. (Dreamcatcher, Page- 90)
William Tell was a hunter who lived in the mountains, and was known for his hunting skills and perfect
target. One day he visited the city with his son, and came across a tall pole with a cap on it. The people
nearby told him that it was Gessler’s cap and every man was bound to bow down before it on Gessler’s
orders. But William Tell refused to bow down before the pole, and instead stood in front of it with folded
arms and laughed at what he heard from the people. When Gessler heard of this, he made up his mind to
punish William Tell, in fear that the other people in his kingdom would start disobeying him too. He ordered
that William Tell’s son would have to stand with an apple on his head, and Tell would have to shoot the
apple with an arrow. Even though Tell begged Gessler, he did not agree to any of it, and said that if Tell
failed to hit the apple, then Gessler’s soldiers would kill the boy. However, Tell was successful in shooting
the apple, and all the people around shouted with joy. At the end of the task, when Tell turned to leave the
place, an arrow fell from under his coat. When Gessler asked where he got the second arrow from, Tell
proudly answered that if his child was hurt, he would have then used this arrow to kill Gessler.

(William Tell was ordered by Gessler to shoot the apple on his son’s head)

Machines, Machines- Poem (Dreamcatcher, Page- 86)

This poem, written by Kathy Henderson, talks about our routine and mechanical lifestyle these days, where
the sounds of machines fill our ears more than the sounds of nature. The poem begins with how the day in
the life of families, starts with the washing machine going “swish-swash-swish”, and the refrigerator going
“mmmm”. The poet then goes to talk about the sounds of the mobile ringing, the radio singing, the vacuum
cleaner going “vroom”. The tumbler dryer too goes “whumpety-flump”, the toaster goes “pop!” and the
DVD, and TV also don’t fail at making funny noises. The poet intricately records and gives us a detailed
description of the noises made by the electrical and mechanical appliances at home, and how our lives are
not devoid of these noises on a daily basis, and how they continue throughout the day along with other
devices too. This poem reminds us of how these sounds rule our lives today, and how we are also gradually
getting detached from the exquisite sounds of nature.
(“The DVD hums, and the TV runs.”)

Paragraph Writing with Clues

The children need to write a paragraph within 50-60 words using the clues given in the brackets for the particular
topic. In order to write a paragraph, they need to brainstorm and put in their ideas and thoughts sequentially. This
will enable them to elaborate on the facts and express their ideas clearly. They can add a moral in the end if they
find it necessary.

NOTE: All written work exercises will be done by the teacher in the online class after
explaining the topic.
