W
elcome to the latest issue of Papercraft Essentials. I’m sure
by now all of you will have your Christmas crafting well
underway – I know I have – there’s nothing I enjoy more
than a bit of cosy crafting as the autumn nights draw in.
This month your free gift is the Sending Christmas Wishes
embossing folder, stamp set and bonus paper pack – one of my
favourite gifts so far this year and the beautiful cards from our
designers will show you why. Turn to page 15 to see Simonne Clay’s
magical creations along with a special step-by-step guide to her
‘Season’s greetings’ card. For quick Christmas makes, check out Fiona
Robertson’s designs (page 84), and if you need a little inspiration for p18
your paper pack head to page 74 to see Nicky Gilburt’s fabulous cards.
If you’re looking for contemporary Christmas designs while learning a
new technique, Marie Jones’s watercolour lifting and heat embossing
Masterclass (page 28) is one for you. Meanwhile birthday, Christmas
and all-occasion cards make up our cut-out-and-keep section from page
41. This issue we have collections from Wild Rose Studio, DigiStamp
Boutique, Aldridge Crafts and Sizzix. p30
Our Beginner’s Guide on page 67 is perfect for if you’re taking a
quick break from Christmas crafting and need some all-occasion ideas.
Kim Dellow’s step-by-step guide to inking on vellum will make you an
expert in no time! Speaking of experts, Sara Davies shares the latest
from Crafter’s Companion in her Problem Solved on page 80.
In case you missed it, our Papercraft Magazines Designer of the Year
competition launched last month – turn to page 36 to find out how you
can enter and see what some of last year’s winners have been up to p47
since the competition ended.
Don’t forget to send your cards and letters to me either in the post,
by email or on Facebook. I’ve had so much fun admiring all of the

Crafting challenge
I would just like to welcome you to
the magazine and say a BIG THANK
YOU for issue 148. I absolutely love
my sunflower stamp set and papers
and I just knew they were the
perfect stamps for my local hospice.
I have challenged myself to make
50 cards for its Summer Fair next
June to help raise much-needed
funds. The papers that came with
my issue are also an amazing addition and will help get
even more out of my stamps.
I have started and have made six so far, doing a
couple of each design. I have enclosed one of my cards
– I hope you like what I’ve done and will send you an

hope they raise some money in the process.

Problem
solved
...with Sara Davies
We catch up with Sara Davies from
Crafter’s Companion as she updates
us on the latest gossip
“Showcasing my new collection in the
John Lewis Oxford Street store”
I
’m back with another catch-up and as always it’s been a very
busy month! It kicked off with an exceedingly early start as I
headed into London for a big press open day at the John Lewis
Oxford Street store to showcase my new Scandinavian Christmas
Signature Collection. I was thrilled when I arrived as our display
looked absolutely fabulous! Even better, the press loved the
collection just as much as you lot seem to – it’s been so popular!
We also had Lizzy Curtis on hand to demonstrate some of our fab
new Threaders fabric at the press day too. It’s lovely to watch her
doing her stuff as she’s so talented, but I have to admit I was a little
bit daunted when she nipped off for some lunch and I had to take
over for a while – I need to brush up on my machine sewing skills,
that’s for sure!
A few days later I had a hard time dragging myself away from
my gorgeous boys at 4am for my first trip abroad without Charlie
since he was born. It was a long four days without them both but
Simon promised to send me pictures all the time and he certainly
kept his word. I received the most wonderful photos as I landed
in Amsterdam for my first connection – they are super cute bless
them! Just a few hours later I was having a pamper with the lovely
Jennifer Tryon, getting our nails done ready for our first shows on
HSN later that night. It was a great few days over in the US and
when I came back I made sure to spend some quality time with
Charlie, including having a mummy’s meet-up with some of my
staff in the shop. There are so many CC babies now that we joke
about opening up our own crèche! It was a very special day and
I was super proud of our local community and all the staff at the
Aycliffe store for the fabulous coffee morning they organised to
raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. The crafty items people
had made absolutely blew me away!

That’s all for now – happy crafting!

EXPERT ADVICE

A new dimension
I’ve seen some gorgeously intricate 3D sentiments taking
centre stage on cards recently. Any tips for how I can
recreate this look on my cards?
Patricia Shaw, Cambridge

Sara says: We’ve seen some really stunning Christmas

card designs this year, and large 3D sentiments are a big
trend that keeps popping up! You can buy some beautiful
readymade chipboard stickers in the shops that would allow
you to achieve this look quickly and easily, but the costs
can certainly add up if you’re planning to make more than
one! However, you’ll be pleased to hear that our Sheena
has released some gorgeous word dies, so you can get the
look for yourself using paper, card or even foil. For a real 3D Summer birthdays
effect, die-cut the sentiment several times from different My granddaughter will be turning 10 over Christmas and I would

Party perfect crafting

We’re holding a party on New Year’s Eve this year and I’m
planning on creating some party invitations to send out. Do
you have any design ideas to get me started?
Debbie Whitaker, Manchester

Sara says: Oh I love a good New Year’s Eve party, and for
me it’s the perfect excuse to bring out the bling! Glitter card,
mirror card, foil, gems, gilding wax – there are loads of ways
you could add a glamorous touch to your invitation designs!
For images, I would suggest something celebration themed
