Ch. 7 Assignment - Word Problems and Solving

This document is a chapter assignment on exponential functions and equations from a Pre-Calculus 12 textbook. It contains 4 problems: 1) solving exponential equations algebraically, 2) determining an equation for an investment growing at 4% interest compounded quarterly, 3) finding the pressure of Earth's atmosphere at different altitudes using an exponential decay model, and 4) describing transformations of exponential functions.

1) Solve algebraically. Show all your work for full marks.

a) 16x  1  81  x

27 x  2 
b) 3

2) You will put aside $3500 to invest in an account that pays interest at 4% per year, compounded quarterly.
Determine an equation to calculate the amount, A, in terms of time, t, in years.

How much an investment of $3500 will be worth after 5 years?

How long will it take for the investment to double in value? Give your answer in years to two decimal places.

3) The pressure of Earth’s atmosphere is 14.7 lb/in.2 at sea level. That pressure decreases by about 20% for
each mile of ascent up to an altitude of about 50 miles.
a) Determine an equation to find the pressure of Earth’s atmosphere, P in lb/in 2, at an altitude, A in miles,
above the sea level.

b) What is the pressure at an altitude of 5 mi above the sea level to hundredths of pound per
square inch (two decimal places).

4) Given an exponential function, write an expression for each function and describe the transformation that’s
involved. See Lesson 7.2 for some examples.
