Triathlon New Zealand

Who we are:

Triathlon New Zealand is the national governing body for the sports of triathlon, duathlon and multisport – we are a non-
profit incorporated society. Based in Newmarket, Auckland, Tri NZ is made up of a team of 15 staff and many passionate
volunteers and supporters. We carry out activities and events on a nationwide basis.

Objectives:

To allow people to easily be involved in the sport and inspire them to participate for life
To allow more Kiwi’s become triathlon fans and are give the inspiration to participate
To have World Champion heroes
To become a world class National Sporting organisation

What we do:

-Promote the sport as a whole through our media program including a TV Show and regular press and radio activity
- Carry out development programs for Youth, Coaching and Referees, including looking after the competition rules and
developing safety and fairness standards across all events
- We own and deliver some key events including a National Triathlon Series and a National Duathlon Series
- Deliver a High Performance program, supporting our elite athletes to win on the world stage
- Host National Championship events and select teams to represent New Zealand at elite and age-group World Champs
- Develop participation pathways for all spectators and fans, competitors, athletes, coaches and technical officials to
ensure all New Zealanders have transparent pathways to participate at their desired level in the sport
- Advocate for the sport in local and central government, work with the International Triathlon Union and other key
stakeholders

lower barriers and encourage more people into our sport.

What this means is that we will position Tri NZ around a simple, single idea in the market – with the ultimate outcome of
fulfilling triathlons participation potential.

1. Media Programme
• Tri NZ TV, 30 episodes watched by over one million people in 2009
• Tri NZ Radio, one hour weekly, Radio Sport, to more than 280,000 people
• Tri NZ Magazine, NZ Multisport and Triathlete magazine, 6 pages per mag
• Media Clippings: print 2790 pages, radio and TV 85 clips (269% increase)

2. Contact Tri Series


• Standard distance racing for elite and age group categories
• Contact 3:9:3 for beginners, Contact 1:2:1 for children, teams racing, corporate
racing
• Live television coverage at Takapuna

3. Age Group Representation


• Tri NZ selected, managed and coordinated 504 athletes in 2009
• The age group programme runs on a break even basis – no profit is made

4. High Performance
• 9 medals at pinnacle events since 2000 and 24 top five placings
• Bevan Docherty consecutive Olympic Medals in Athens and Beijing
• Number one ranked country in Beijing Olympic qualification

5. Coaching
• Ran 9 courses over the past two years
• Tri has over 100 accredited coaches, of whom the majority are actively coaching
• Provided a clear pathway of development from entry level to elite

6. Youth Development
• Over 200 visits to schools by athletes, coaches and Tri NZ personnel
• Institution of the Youth Academy, streamlining promising athletes into HP
programme

7. Technical
• 65 events earned Tri NZ endorsement in 2009
• 150 Level 1 officials trained, with now 6 officials reaching international TO status
and another 4 undertaking level 2 ITO training, 1 official reaching the level 3 ITO
status
• 5 programmes and technical courses put on by Tri NZ in 2009

8. International Exposure
• World Tri Festival World Cup, 2 years
• World Tri Festival, Oceania Cup, 1 year
• Wellington, Oceania Cup, 3 years
• Takapuna, Wellington and Kinloch, international field

9. Club Infrastructure and Support


• Free public liability insurance around events
• Assistance with best practice in all areas of administration and events
• Open communication and feedback with and from the clubs
• Empowering clubs to develop the sport in their regions

10. Refocus on participation


• Triathlon the fastest growing sport in independent Nielsens survey
• Triathlon participation base up to 99,000, from 47,000 in 2000
• Triathlon is embracing beginner and novice athletes with easy access to coaching,
training and participation.

Summary
In conclusion, Triathlon in New Zealand is in great heart. The sport is growing rapidly
but in a controlled fashion, the sports national body has its finger on the pulse and has
overhauled the long term strategy for the sport while not losing sight of the short term
goals and needs of its stakeholders. But now is not the time to rest on any laurels, now
is the time to refocus and ensure that Triathlon grows further in the hearts and minds
of all New Zealanders.

Overview

Keys things to know if you are staring out in Triathlon, Duathlon or Multisport

Triathlon has 4 key distances or events:

1. Sprint Distance 750m Swim, 20km Bike, 5km Run


2. Standard/ Olympic Distance 1500m Swim, 40km Bike, 10km Run
3. ½ Ironman 2km(ish) Swim, 90km Bike, 21km Run
4. Ironman 3.8km Swim, 180km Bike, 42km Run
5. If you are starting out you may race a super sprint event which could be
anything
from a 50m – 300m swim, 4km – 16km bike and 1km – 3km run.

Duathlon has 3 key distances:

1. Sprint Distance 5km Run, 20km Bike, 2.5km Run


2. Standard Distance 10km, 40km, 5km
3. Long Distance 10 or longer, 60 or longer, 10 or longer

Multisport by definition is a mixture of many sports and distances and typically vary
as to which
sports are involved. Races can last between 30minutes for a beginners event up to 7
days or more in an
Adventure Multisport event.

Here is a list of sports which you may find in a Multisport race:
