For a manager or owner running a business is making a series of decisions on daily basis.

It’s a hard job


to make such decisions alone which results either profit or loss. Therefore making decision in group is
often the best choice. As there are more people involved in making a decision therefore chances of
making wrong decision gets considerably reduced. Group decision is basically type of participatory
process in which multiple people acts collectively , analyze the problems , decide the possible solutions
and selects the best one among of them. The procedure which a company can follow is

Defining the Problem


The very first step is to define the problem and what are the causes of problem. The next step is to
identify the decision to be made in order to solve the problem. In decision making decide who you
should include in group and how to define the problem in front of group

Brain-Storming
Brain storming is basically is describing the problem verbally to group so that members can have
complete understanding of problem. Then group members verbally suggest the ideas or alternative
course of actions. Brain storming is usually unstructured. The ideas presented are then written on some
board with marker or some flip-chart is being made.

Pros and Con’s of proposed solutions


After taking the ideas of from every group member the next step is to discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of every proposed solution. This can be done in more effective manner by selecting a
solution and discuss that solution by dividing the members in two teams one of which will be in favour
of that solution while other will negate that solution. This technique is also called as Delphi technique.

Selecting the Best Solution


Once everyone knows all the proposed solutions the next step is to select the best of among them. This
is usually done by the consensus in team. There are also some other methods of choosing a solution.
The other method is to agree all members on one particular solution. One way is to list the 5 proposed
solutions and every member will rank each solution. The solution which got maximum points will be best
solution.

Encouraging Creativity
In effective group decision making there needs to be balancing between what the group leader does and
what group members do.

Build A Diverse Team


Many business owners hire homogeneous group of people in their company. The team should have
different kind of people in it .In this way the team would have variety of skills and strength and it will
encourage healthy debate among them. Manager should create an environment where failure is okay
and every persons point of view is encouraged.
Give Direction
Creativity requires a balanced approach. Effective teams need a target to aim for. In order to obtain
creative solutions give basic goals and parameters. You should know what your team need from you as a
leader. Your Job is to support them towards success.

Empower Them
The reason most people fail as leaders is not allowing the room for their team members to fail and grow.
If one of employee is not performing well a good leader always give the time to let him discover what it
takes in order to develop. When a leader takes over he helps his weak employees and tells them what
exactly to do.

Don’t worry about how


Don’t focus too early about how to do implementations this weakens the creativity of employees

Promote Experimentation
One of the best way to increase creativity is promoting experimentation and supporting failure. When
the fear of failure vanishes employees always try some new strategies this increases the creativity.
