1) Level of Students: Beginners

Numbers of Students: 8-14

Time of Activity: 50 min

2) Target Group: Group of adults whose English is an additional language to their L1. They are new
arrivals in Canada. Their L1 is Arabic.

3) Subject & Title: Tense (Verbs: present tense versus past tense)

4)-
Goal: The goal will be to initiate these students to understand and use basic grammatical skills to let
them make sense of the way verbs (through examples) are inflected in the present or past tenses in
English so as they can say basic sentenses to let them get along in their daily intercations and learn the
rest in context wether through acquisition or learning proper. A good start is through scafolding their
learning through the use and understanding of the following verbs/auxiliaries ‘ tobe’ and ‘ to have’ in
addition to a couple of daily used verbs ( speak, eat, give, take ). The use of their L1 to help them out
grasp the meaning is also recommended in the case of these types of students .

-Terminal Objectives:
* Students will be able to use consciously intial verbs in either present or past tenses and remember
the type of inflections ( teacher needs to refer in this context to the contrast between regular and
iregular verbs, but not in an indepth way like it should be in the case of EFL).

* Students will be able to use the above verbs in context through very basic examples.

* Studenst will be able to use very basic vocabulary to complete the meaning of the chosen verb , such
as ‘telling how old are they’ and ‘where they are from’.

5) Material needed for the activity:

An Educational video (less than 8 min) chosen for this specific purposes, since audiovisual material is
good for beginners to retain and appropriate information at the cognitive level.

Using online quiz about the verb ‘to be’ in the present tense (http://a4esl.org/q/f/x/xz85mbs.htm). So,
in this case students will be a classroom with a projector to allow them see the video and reply to the
online exercise.

Classroom should be organized in a ciricular shape ( tables put in a circle) to allow very basic patterns
of conversation and break the inhibition factor.

Blank papers will be provided for students to note down things thy want to retain. Teacher may
guide/advise them to note down things they will need to keep for a future mini-test (such as how to be
and to have are inflected when used in present tense and past tense). A list of list verb inflection will
be given to them ( past and present verbial inflections of ‘to have’ and ‘ to be’).

6) Process of Activity:

Introduction (6min + 14 min=20 min): Teacher will record an instructional video using the screen
interface recording platform (CAMSTASIA) to record a purposefully designed lesson for this specific
classroom intervention. He can either use his voice or that of an avatar through using speific spftware
to produce avatars with secific assigned voice/accent (UK, US, CAN).
Students will follow up the video on screen (class projector).

Students will be asked to have a piece of paper to write down what they cleary see and hear regarding
the used verbs and vocabulary (also the spelling and the way it is pronounced). The Teacher will
respect a pace specific for beginners ( repetition, clarity, pictures, may be translation as well if
neceessary).

Teacher will ask students to get in twos or threes to dicuss what they noted. Then, one of the student
will speak on behalf of the group. But, teacher can address a question with another student of the
group to test their understanding.

Intent: To lead students to be able to activatr and usr multi-set skills to understand and use some of
the commonly used verbs in their present and past tenses. They will also develop listening, speaking
and very basic note taking skills.

Main ( 30 min): Students will interact with the teacher and others using basic questions or statements
to apply and operationalize...such as using the following structures :

Yesturday, I ate an apple. And you ?

Right now I am in the classroom.
I have 3 brothers, and you ?
I speak English.
I am syrian, and you ?

Then, the teacher will use the online quiz ( for the verb to be), after which he can place one slide on
power point ( for the verb to have) for students to see and fill the missing gap.

Intent: Intercation in groups to use monologue statements, questions and vocabulary they came to
know fom the video or perhaps they know a priori.

7) Assessment:

Students will be assessed at the performative and summative levels. The first, consists in observing
their performance ( level of conifedence, usage and use of simple verbs in their past or presnet tense,
use basic questions and get basic replies from their peer). The summative consists in providing the
students with a mini-homework.

8) Follow up homework : Ask student to prepare a mini homework consisting in writing down
examples using similar verbs they studied in their past and present tense . This time with other
pronouns they did not use in the classroom. They will be allowed to use bilingual dictionaries to help
them out.
