Q1. (a) How can you tell that the equation x = -2 has no real solution without actually going through a
1/4

solution process?
(b) Let f(x) = 2x2-6x. If h represents any nonzero number, then the quotient

represents the slope of the line through (x, f(x)) and (x+h, f(x+h)). Find and simplify the quotient.
(c) Suppose y is directly proportional to x , and x is replaced by (1/3)x , what happens to y?

Q2. (a) Simple interest varies jointly as principal, rate and time. If $1000left at interest for 2 yr earned
$110, find the amount of interest earned by $5000 in 5 yr at the same rate.
(b) What is the difference between equation and inequality? What is rational inequality?
