Central Idea : The role of social media as a potentially viable intervention platform for
offering support to persons with mental disorders, promoting engagement and retention in
care, and enhancing existing mental health services, while balancing the need for safety
Introduction
1. Attention getter :
a.) If social media communication leads to mental health issues, the social media
communication still reliable and lot of people still using it, why you still using the social media
communication
b.) Most Malaysian did not aware about the importance of mental health issue that happened
when it related to social media communication and most of us blame on it without knowing
the potential of social media communication to the mental health. To add more we cannot
avoid the current era which always keep progressive each year, but we must adapt it and
manifest it into our own benefit instead of throwing fire on the issue.
2. Reveal topic :
a.) In 2020, there are an estimated 3.8 billion social media users worldwide, representing
half the global population (We Are Social 2020). Recent studies have shown that individuals
with mental disorders are increasingly gaining access to and using mobile devices, such as
smartphones.
a.) In my families, I had a sibling with serious mental illness using the social media
communiation as motivations as well as the perceived benefits of interacting on these
platforms.
b.) After doing some information search, I want to persuade my audience that social media
communication does not lead to mental health issue. As a responsible Malaysian, it is our
duty to gave other people awareness and ourselves social media communication are
actually good to our mental health.
(Transition: Let’s look more closely why social media communication are not lead to mental
health issue)
Body
A. Social media platforms offer near continuous opportunities to connect and interact with
others, regardless of time of day or geographic location. This on demand ease of
communication may be especially important for facilitating social interaction among
individuals with mental disorders experiencing difficulties interacting in face-to-face settings
2. This was suggested in one study where participants with schizophrenia indicated that
social media helped them to interact and socialize more easily (Miller et al. 2015).
3. Social media overcomes geographic boundaries and time constraints, and allows users to
choose whether or not to actively create content, disclose personal health information, post
comments, or passively view content posted by others. Research suggests that within an
online network, both individuals who choose to share content or connect with different users,
as well as those who choose to seek health information without interacting with others can
experience important benefits (van Uden-Kraan et al. 2008; Mo & Coulson, 2010; Chung,
2014)
B. Social media communication improve social connection
1. This is an important observation because individuals living with serious mental disorders
typically have few social contacts in the offline world and also experience high rates of
loneliness (Badcock et al. 2015; Giacco et al. 2016).
a. Among individuals receiving publicly funded mental health services who use
social media, nearly half (47%) reported using these platforms at least weekly
to feel less alone (Brusilovskiy et al. 2016).
C. Online communication is more preffered to help in mental health issue has been shown in
several studies.
a. Emerging research also shows that young people with moderate to severe
depressive symptoms appear to prefer communicating on social media rather
than in-person (Rideout and Fox 2018), while other studies have found that some
individuals may prefer to seek help for mental health concerns online rather than
through in-person encounters (Batterham and Calear 2017).
II. There are many ways to benefit social media communication could help mental health
issue
1. Online interactions may be easier for individuals with impaired social functioning
and facing symptoms
2. Anonymity can help individuals with stigmatizing conditions connect with others
3. Young adults with mental illness appear to commonly form online relationships
1. Studies of online peer support groups fnd many positive aspects that resemble those of
ofine peer support groups, including; social connectedness, help cope with day-to-day
challenges and stigma reduction, and facilitate insights into health care decisions,
empowerment, and recovery processes. Additionally, online peer support groups have been
found to provide emotional support, insights and experiences about living with mental health
problems which are not typically available through traditional mental health care.
2. Prior studies have emphasised the importance of individuals feeling connected to others
and sharing a sense. Identifying with a social group is believed to increase self-esteem and
self-efficacy, and reduce uncertainty about oneself.
(Transition: Perception on social media communication lead to mental health issue in our
mindset need to be change because there are various of benefit that wll help them in such of
many ways)
(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence à Visualization)
III. Social media use also yields new opportunities to study the onset and manifestation of
mental health symptoms and illness severity earlier than traditional clinical assessments.
i. Given that most people access social media via mobile devices, digital phenotyping and
social media are closely related (Torous et al. 2019).
Conclusion
II. Social media communication to share their lived experiences with mental
illness, to seek support from others, and to search for information about
treatment recommendations, accessing mental health services and coping
with symptoms (Bucci et al. 2019; HightonWilliamson et al. 2015; Naslund et
al. 2016b).
IV. Social media platforms can advance efforts to close the gap in available
mental health services in the Malaysia and globally, it will be essential for
researchers to work closely with clinicians and with those affected by mental
illness to ensure that possible benefits of using social media are carefully
weighed against anticipated risk.
