Structural lumber is classified into four main categories: dimension, beams and stringers, posts and timbers, and decking. Dimension lumber ranges from 50-100mm thick and is used for framing. Beams and stringers must be at least 125mm thick and are graded for strength in bending. Posts and timbers are square or nearly square pieces 125mm or larger used as columns. Decking is 50-100mm thick with tongue and groove edges for use in floors.

Use Classification of
Structural Lumber
Structural sawn lumber consists of lumber classifications known as “Dimension”, “Beams
and Stringers”, “Post and Timbers”, and “Decking”, with design values assigned to each
grade.

Dimension
Dimension refers to lumber from 50 mm t0 100 mm (nominal) thick, and 50 mm (nominal)
or more width. Dimension lumber is further classified as Structural Light Framing, Light
Framing, Studs, and Joist and Planks.

Beams and Stringers

Beams and Stringers refers to lumber of rectangular cross section, 125 mm (nominal) or
thicker, with width more than 50 mm greater than thickness, graded with respect to its
strength in bending when loaded on the narrow face.

Posts and Timbers

Posts and Timbers refers to lumber of square or approximately square cross section, 125
mm x 125 mm (nominal) and larger, with width not more than 50 mm greater than
thickness, graded primarily for use as posts or columns carrying longitudinal load.

Decking
Decking refers to lumber from 50 mm to 100 mm (nominal) thick, tongued and grooved
for spline on the narrow face, and intended for use as a roof, floor, or wall membrane.
Decking is graded for application in the flatwise direction, with the wide face of the decking
in contact with the supporting members, as normally installed.

Self-Assessment Questionnaire No.6 (SAQ6):

1. What are the classifications of Structural Sawn Lumber?
2. Type of lumber use for floor.
3. Type of lumber use for column
4. Type of lumber use for framing
5. Type of lumber use for girder
