MODULE IN ATTRACTION AND THEME PARK OPERATION 12

Second Quarter /Week 3/Day 3 & 4
A. Objectives:
1.     Assist and rescue customers
B. Lesson/Topic:
1. Assisting and Rescuing Customers
Lesson Information

One of the tasks of a theme park employee is to perform patron surveillance.

This means keeping a close watch over the customers of the theme park and
intervening when necessary. He or she must always be alert and ready to act
when customers need help.

The Red Cross provides training to lifeguards, including identification of persons in distress and
rescuing them.
The theme park employee must be well-versed with how to operate the ride or equipment according
to the manufacturer’s instructions. This enables him or her to assist customers who might not be
able to operate the ride or equipment correctly.
The theme park employee should be properly trained to identify signs of distress or danger promptly.
A person who raises his or her hand might be calling for help. The signs of distress include, but are
not limited to the following customer behavior, as identified by the American Red Cross:
 Bobbing in and out of the water
 Crawling hand-over-hand along a pool wall
 Unsupervised toddlers or children
 Clinging to or grabbing something to stay afloat
 Improper wearing of a life jacket
 Swimming underwater for an extended period of time
A customer might also be experiencing a sudden illness, like hypertension, while in the water. The
theme park employee has to watch out for signs such as when the customer suddenly stops
swimming and stays at the shallow part of the water with very minimal movement.
When the theme park employee has already verified that a customer is in need of help, he or she
must be able to carry out assitance or rescue as required.
Rescue – means to save a person from danger or harm. He or she may throw a flotation device into
the water to help the customer float. He or she may also throw a rope wiith a small loop at one end
to be able to pull the customer to safety. If he or she has very good swimming skills, he or she may
jump into the water as a last resort to rescue the customer.

The theme park employee must also be trained to perform resucsitation and/or cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) if the customer becomes unconscious and professional medical help has not yet
arrived.
Resuscitation – refers to the act of bringing an unconscious person back to a conscious or active
state. Mayo clinic defines CPR as a lifesaving technique used in emergencies where a person’s
heartbeat or breathing has stopped.

LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Directions: Work on the exercise. Write your output on a sheet of paper.

Look for videos about basic rescue, resuscitation, and/or CPR. Take note of the procedures.
Assess whether you would be able to peform such emergency assistance.

Generalization

Riders should be unloaded in a courteous and friendly fashion. Those who are
having difficulty standing or exiting the ride should be given assistance. The
theme park employee must show them the exit gates, as some of them might still
be dizzy and disoriented after the rdie. As they exit the ride location, the theme
park employee should also thank them for trying out the ride and tell them his or
her desire to see them again on their next visit.
