DESIGN REPORT

1 INTRODUCTION
This report has been prepared as a part of the structural engineering analysis and design of
the Residential building.
The planned building is two story tall building with roof truss. The functional parameters relevant
to the design of the facilities would comprise those related to the user’s requirement and guided
by the design standards via the standard norms, standards bye -laws and municipal bye - laws.
Architectural and Planning design criteria has been made with the consultation of different
experts such as Architect, Planner and Structural Engineer etc.
The massive data inputs, design analysis, calculations and outputs of the result are computer
aided by the Structural analysis and design software called ETABS Ultimate Version 18.1.1 It
provides the Structural Engineer with all the tools necessary to create, modify, analyze, design,
and optimize the structural elements in a building model.
Based on the final results, the designs have been performed and drawings were prepared using
AutoCAD.
For the design of the building, the Indian Standard criteria for earthquake resistant design IS
1893:2002 have been referred. According to the IS Code, the seismic zone for Kathmandu has
been taken falling in Zone V with very severe seismic intensity (zone factor Z = 0.36) and
accordingly all other parameters like spectral coefficient (Sa/g) and tremor response period or
fundamental natural period (T) were calculated. After that all design requirements such as
seismic weight of building, lateral forces at different floor levels and different column heads,
base shear, distribution of design forces to different floor levels are considered.
The characteristic compressive strength for concrete of 20 N/mm2 (M20) was used in all
structural members and characteristic strength of 500 N/mm2 (Fe500) was used for reinforcing
steel. And Fe 250 MS steel is used as the steel structures members.

4.3 METHOD OF ANALYSIS & DESIGN

Depending on the type of project, there are several well-established methods among which
Finite Element Method (FEM) is perhaps the most sophisticated and all-encompassing one.
For analysis and design checking of the building, powerful finite element based structural
design software package ETABS v18.1.1 has been employed for analysis. A full three-
dimensional modelling of the structure has been developed using frame and shell elements. At
base level, the columns are assumed to be held fixed due to fixed connection of baseplate.

4.4 LOAD COMBINATION

The basic sources of loads are described in earlier section. These loads are applied on the model
in basic categories. These are as follows:
Load Case 1: Floor finish and partition wall (DL).
Load Case 2: Live load on floor and roof (LL)
Load Case 3: Earthquake load (EQ)
Load Case 4: Wind Load (WL)

Self-weight of structure (SW) is calculated automatically & added to DL by the software.

These basic load cases are analyzed by ETABS. The results are then combined as per IS 1893
2016 Part 1 Limit State design automatically by the software.

4.5 APPLICATION OF LOAD AND ANALYSIS

A static analysis is performed using the following loadings and combinations of loads
mentioned earlier. Some pictorial representation of applied load & analysis results are shown
in figures below.
