Syllabus for I/II semester BE

Academic Year 2019-20

BASIC ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING


Course Code : EC103/203 LTPC: 3-0-0-3
Exam Hours : 3 Hours / Week : 3
SEE : 50 Marks Total hours : 40

Course Objective: An understanding of basic electronics devices, circuits and system


including digital devices, microprocessor and microcontroller, operational amplifier, communication
and display devices.

Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:

Course Contents:
MODULE – 1
Introduction to Basic electronic devices: V-I characteristics of Semiconductor diode, Half-
Wave rectifier and Full-Wave rectifier: Circuit diagram, working, input and output waveforms.
V-I characteristics of Zener diode, Zener diode as a voltage regulator. Working principles and
applications of Photodiode, LED and solar cell.
Junction transistor: Types of transistor - Transistor action, Input and output characteristics
of CE - configuration, Transistor as a switch, Transistor as an amplifier

MODULE – 2
Analog Devices:
JFET: Construction and principle of working, Drain / Transfer characteristics, basic
amplifier circuits, Various amplifier configurations using FET.
MOSFET: Enhancement and depletion type N-channel, P-channel MOSFETs, Drain /
Transfer Characteristics.
SCR, TRIAC, UJT: Characteristics, Construction and their basic areas of applications.

MODULE – 3
Digital Electronics:
Building blocks of a Digital system: Half Adder, Full Adder, Encoder, Decoder, Flip-Flop
- Introduction to Flip-Flops, RS Flip-Flop, Gated Flip-Flops: Clocked RS Flip-Flop, D-Flip Flop,
T- Flip-Flop, Introduction to Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, 8051
Microcontroller architecture, Comparison between Microprocessors and Microcontrollers.

MODULE – 4
Op-Amp and Oscillators:
Operational Amplifier & its Applications: Characteristics (Ideal Op-amp, Practical
Op-amp), Inverting and Non-inverting Amplifier, Voltage follower, Summing Amplifier and
Subtractor, Numerical examples as applicable.
Oscillators: Introduction to Oscillators, Basic feedback theory, Positive and Negative
feedback, RC phase shift oscillator, Colpitt’s oscillator and Crystal oscillator (circuit
diagram and working)

MODULE – 5
Applications of Electronics (Block Diagram approach only): Block diagram of generalized
communication system, Need for modulation - Frequency modulation. FM Radio, Digital
modulation- ASK and FSK, Cellular Networks, Uninterruptible power supply(UPS), LED and
LCD Displays, Color TV , Digital oscilloscope.
