Wärtsila Nacos Platinum Multi Function Display (MFD)

The NACOS Platinum system is integrated Navigation-Automation-COntrol-System from

Wärtsilä SAM Electronics.
It is based on a number of MFDs (Multi-Function-Displays also called MFDs), which are connected to each
other by a ring network. Each MFD is providing a set of applications for the main bridge tasks. If one
MFD fails, the user can continue the main tasks from any other MFD in the network.

This MFD is based on a Personal Computer which has been prepared for maritime applications. A shock
and vibration damping installation platform is protecting the harddrive and other electronics and
additional EMC measures have been implemented. This PC with the complete SW package consisting
of the operating system and the Platinum applications is called Display Electronics.
The user interface is the same on each MFD, i.e. the MFDs on-board are standardized.
All Platinum applicationscan be made available on any MFD.

MFDs are comprising the Display Electronics with installation platform, the Widescreen Monitor, and
the Operating Device.
Operating can take place either with a Trackball optionally combined with Radar and Track Control
keyboard or, for planning and automation control stations, simply with standard mouse and ASCII
keyboard.

When the MFD is started, a basic screen is displayed, which is referred to as Super Home from where
you have access to all functions and information which are available on the specific MFD.
If the MFD is already running, select Super Home from the main menu or click in the bottom right
menu bar "house" icon to switch over to Super Home.

RADAR
The RADAR application is part of Wärtsila Nacos Platinum Multi Function Display (MFD)
and shows the raw video as well as the radar targets processed by the antenna unit
which has been selected by the operator. The new IP RADAR technology allows the operator to switch
via network to any assigned antenna unit on-board (three X-band as well as one S-band units).

Advanced filter techniques are used for clutter suppression and enhanced small target detection. Various
navigation tools are available for collision detection and calculation based on the pre-processed targets.
AIS targets from a separate AIS transponder unit are processed exactly in the same way as radar targets.
RADAR and AIS targets can be merged together.
The user may edit his own user symbols and route data on a separate layer under the radar presentation.

Overview of the RADAR Screen

ECDIS application allows the RADAR to be used in "Chart Radar" mode.

It provides an ECDIS background within the bearing scale on the PPI. Chart data bases for ENC
are used. The Chart Radar is approved as ECDIS back-up.

Wärtsila Nacos Platinum Trackpilot and Speedpilot

The TRACKPILOT (TP) is divided into four parts :

• The TP Expander is part of the Platinum

SW and available on each Platinum MFD
(workstation) which has been configured for
TRACKPILOT operation or slave indication.

• The TP Keyboard is part of the console and

available on each Platinum MFD (workstation) which has been built
for TRACKPILOT operation. From here the master mode can be
selected providing control of the TRACKPILOT functions.

• The TP Electronics with the track controller is

embedded computer which has no
further user interface. It receives periodically the next few
waypoints together with associated track limit and other pilot data
and calculates based on the sensor signals the necessary rudder
settings to keep the ship on track.

• The TP Interface receives the rudder settings from the TP Electronics

and converts the data into the appropriate analogue or
digital signals (i.e. for relay control). It comprises an internal
capacitor bank for signal hold in order to keep the last rudder
setting in case of a power break down.

All units except the TP Keyboard are connected to each other via ship navigation network (Ethernet)
for data exchange. The Operating unit is connected to the MFD Electronics via USB.

SPEEDPILOT - not installed

The TRACKPILOT can optionally be equipped with a SPEEDPILOT function. This option can remotely
control the propulsion leaver(s) so that a speed which has been set during route planning or actually by
the operator is maintained during the whole voyage independent from weather, wind, and other disturbances.
The drift component is taken into account insofar as it is contained in the measured speed of
the selected speed sensor.

Type Approval
The TRACKPILOT system is approved as a Heading Control System according to MED A1 item 4.16 and
as a Track Control System Category C according to MED A1 item 4.33.

Wärtsila BNWAS Platinum

The BNWAS is a Navigator Fitness Check system.

The purpose of a Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm Sytem (BNWAS) is to monitor bridge activity
and detect operator disability which could lead to marine acidents. The system monitors
the awareness of the Officer of the Watch(OOW) and automatically alerts the Master or another qualified
OOW if, for any reason, the OOW becomes incapable of performing the OOW´s duties. This purpose is
achieved by a series of indications and alarms to alert first the OOW and, if he or she is not responding,
the to alert the Master or another qualified OOW. Additionally, the BNWAS may provide the OOW with
a means of calling for immediate assistance if required. The BNWAS should be operational whenenver
the ship´s heading or track control system is engaged, unless inhibited by the Master.

The Navigator Fitness Check system is in accordance with the IMO Resolution MSC.128(75) (adopted on
20 May 2002)
Timing of the Fitness Check is described in the IMO resolution. Below is the timing shown for the:
• Visual Indication
• First Stage
• Second Stage
• Third Stage

The BNWAS can be operated in 3 Modes:

• Automatic (Automatically brought into operation whenever the ship's heading or track control system
is activated and inhibited when this system is not activated)
• Manual ON (In operation constantly)
• Manual OFF (Does not operate under any circumstances)

Wärtsila VDR 4360

The Voyage Data Recorder (furthermore referred to as VDR), records the outputs from sensors (connected
external equipment) and ultimately passes the data to Final Recording Media for storage.

This data is, depending upon the type of Final Recording Medium (FRM, storage medium) is stored from
48 hours to 30 consecutive days as a minimum period so that in the event of an accident the data can be
recovered and an analysis of the events leading up to the incident may be conducted.

The following components form the basis of the Voyage Data Recorder System:

1. VDR 4360 Core Module (CM) [including power-supply]

2. VHF line-interface
3. Microphones [Interior and Exterior]
4. Protected Data-storage Unit (PDU) [FRM + FFC] :
FRM capsule HVR04 and EPIRB/FRM Float Free Capsule Tron-40VDR
5. Data Acquisition Unit (DAQ)
6. NACOS Platinum MFD

The VDR can continuously record bridge audio communications, sensor data, alarm status as
well as radar images. The recorded data is digitally stored in the final recording media, which
is housed in a Protected Data Unit (PDU). A series of stringent tests including fire, penetration
and deep sea immersion maximizes the probability of survival and recovery of the recorded data
after any incident.

ZÖLLNER signal system

On a vessel with a totally enclosed bridge the sound reception system serves as an
acoustic electronic navigational aid which alerts the officer on the watch to outside sound
signals from other ships. The system displays the direction of the incoming sound in order to
perform the look out function as required in the International Regulations for Preventing
Collisions at Sea, 1972.

In addition to the requirement in Resolution A.694 (17) the system fulfills the following
functional requirements (ref. MSC 86/70 adopted on 8 December 1998, Recommendations
on Performance Standards for Sound Reception Systems, Annex 1):
• Receiving sound signals from all directions in the audio band 70 Hz to 820 Hz
by means of four microphones
• Reproducing incoming sound signals acoustically inside the bridge
• Indicating the direction of the incoming sound signals on an optical display
• Suppressing unwanted background noise and allowing reception of a meaningful sound

The sound reception system type SRD 414/2 consists of two main components:
• The master control panel for indication of the sound direction and for reproduction of an
audible signal inside the bridge
• The microphone sensor unit located on top of the bridge superstructure for detecting the
incoming sound signals

Magnetic Bearing Compass Binnacle "Cassens & Plath GmbH"

and Anschütz Magnetic sonde Type 108-010

The magnetic compass is found within the compass binnacle. It is easy to remove and to replace with spare one.
Spare magnetic compasses are obligatory according to SOLAS.
A divided verge ring on top of the compass allows taking bearings of coastal or heavenly objects. A vane type
azimuth device with a swivel black mirror is included in the range of delivery to allow compass and relative
bearings.
In spite of the distance to any magnetic source a deflecting influence -the deviation- cannot be totally excluded.
For correction of these residual errors the compass binnacle possesses an adjusting arrangement.
Installation of magnetic compasses and the requirements for their location are laid down in basic national and
international regulations. These are IMO A.382(X) and SOLAS consolidated Edition, 1992, Chapter V, reg. 12.
The technical and design requirements for magnetic compasses are laid down in ISO 2269 orISO 449 as well as
in the relevant national documents.

Raytheon Anschütz Digital Repeater Compass

The Digital Repeater Compass is designed to indicate the ship’s heading referring to north,
which has been ascertained by the Gyro/Magnetic compass. The heading is read off at a
7 segment LCD display (luminous numerals). The Gyro heading is shown in degrees and
decimal degrees. The decimal digit is made smaller to prevent erroneous reading.
Heading changes are indicated by a tendency indicator. Depending on the speed of the
heading change, a ring consisting of bi-colour LCDs indicate a turn to starboard by green
light and a turn to backboard by red light. The R.o.T. in the LED ring is proportional to the
ship’s R.o.T.

Further characteristics of the Digital Repeater Compass:

•Recognition of a RS 422 interface acc. to NMEA and therefore automatic changeover
of the operation mode when heading serial is detected.
•Synchronisation unnecessary because transmission of absolute values

Raytheon Anschütz Repeater Compass 133-560

The Repeater Compass, Type 133 - 560, shows the heading from a compass. The heading is indicated by a
360° and a 10° card. The Repeater Compass is designed to indicate heading from magnetic, gyro or satellite
compasses (or Transmitting Heading Devices – THDs) via a serial interface (Course BUS, NMEA or a CAN Bus).
It can be configured to indicate the selected heading (from a heading management system or INS) or to
indicate one heading source (gyro/satellite or magnetic compass) permanently and independent from the
selected heading source if Course Bus is used.
In addition the Steering Repeater can be configured to indicate alerts (acoustical and optical) if connected
via Course Bus to a Standard 22 Compact.
Other useful features are a 180° heading offset (e.g. for aft workstation) or a central
dimming function (if part of a Standard 22 Compass system) via CAN Bus or via NMEA.

An anti-reflective screen covers the cards on the front panel of the Repeater Compass.
The lubber line is inside the plate.
LEDs illuminate the lubber line and the cards in an area of ± 55°. In the lower area of the front plate on the
left side a LED can light up in one of three colours (red, yellow, green) and shows alarm (red),
