Lesson: Problem-Solving Investigation: The Four-Step Plan

Common Core State Standards

Common Core State Standards

7.RP.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

In this lesson, emphasize Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with Mathematics). Using the four-step plan,
students will learn a method to reason inductively when solving real-world problems.

Focus narrowing the scope

Objective Solve problems by using the Four-Step Plan. This lesson emphasizes Mathematical Practice 4
Model with Mathematics.

The Four-Step Plan Problems can often be solved by using different strategies. Sometimes a problem can be
solved more easily with one strategy than another. Some students will find using one strategy easier than others.

As students enter the classroom, have them complete the Common Core Quick Check to review and assess the
skills presented in the previous lesson.

Develop the Concept Present the class with the following scenario. Tell students that you want to determine the
two months in which the most members of the class were born.
Ask:
What question(s) do you need to ask? What month were you born?
How could you gather the data? class survey
What would be a good way to record the data? tally chart; table
How might you organize and display the data? table; bar graph; circle graph

The problems on pages 41 and 42 are intended to be used as a whole-group discussion on how to solve
non-routine problems and are designed to provide scaffolded guidance. The problem on page 41 walks students
through the solution, while the problem on page 42 asks students to come up with their own solutions.

Case #1 'Round and 'Round

Have students extend the problem by having them answer the question below.
Ask:
Use the four-step plan to find how many inches tall the Ferris wheel is. 900 inches

Case #2 Cool Treats

Roundrobin Have students work in pairs to share the steps of four-step plan and their strategy for
each step. One student explains and shares how they completed the first step, Understand. The second student
explains and shares how they completed the second step, Plan. Then the first student explains and shares how they
completed the third step, Solve. The second student explains and shares how they completed the last step, Check.

Trade-a-Problem Have students use the internet to write their own real-world problem that can be
solved by using the four-step plan. Then have them trade their problems with each other and solve each other’s

Levels of Complexity
The levels of the exercises progress from 1 to 3, with Level 1 indicating the lowest level of complexity.

Pairs Discussion Have students work in pairs to answer the following questions about Exercise 1.
Then have them trade their solutions with another pair of students and discuss any differences. 1, 2
Ask:
The equation to determine the value of Terry’s account for any month is v = 150 + 30m. What do the numbers
150 and 30 mean in the equation? 150 is the initial deposit Terry made in December and 30 is the amount Terry
deposits each month.
What is the value of Terry’s account at the end of November? $480
Terry deposits $30 and withdraws $80 in August. What is the value of the account at the end of August? $310
Think-Pair-Share Have students work in pairs. Have one student read Exercise 4 aloud. Give
students one minute to think through their strategy. Have them share their strategy and their response with their
partner. Then call on one student to share their response within a small group or large group discussion. 1, 2
