Learning Activity Sheet in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

PERFORM GROOVE WELDING ON CARBON STEEL PLATES (GW)

I. Learning Competency with Code

Weld carbon steel plates in flat position (1G) and International
Welding Codes and Standard (TLE_IAAW9-12GW-Iaj-1)

II. Background Information for Learners

 Flat Position (1G or 1F) This type of welding is performed from the upper
side of the joint. The face of the weld is approximately horizontal. Flat
welding is the preferred term; however, the same position is sometimes called
downhand.
 WELDING CARBON STEEL Low-carbon mild steel is not only the most
widely used metal; it is also the easiest to weld. Although most steel welding
is done today with coated electrodes, or by one of the consumable-wire arc
welding processes, oxy- acetylene welding of steel, especially in thicknesses
of 1/4 in.

International welding Codes and Standard

Welder Qualifications
Qualifications of a welder is an extremely technical subject and cannot be
covered. It is recommended that the code be obtained and studied prior to taking any
test.

Terms used in this section:

Codes – documents that govern and guide welding and other activities. Codes
generally used the word shall to indicate the mandatory use of certain types of
materials, methods and procedures.

Standards - generally describe the requirements for materials, process, products,

system or services rendered. Standards often specify the procedures methods,
equipment and tests that determine if standards requirements have been meet.
Specifications- are similar to codes except that specification mainly provide
requirements for product rather than process.

The purpose of codes, standards and specifications is to secure safe and

reliable products are produced and that those persons working around welded
structures and equipment are not expose to undue danger or hazard to their health.

Welding Specifications:

❖ G = Groove
❖ F = Fillet

PLATE

1 – Flat Position
2 – Horizontal Position
3 – Vertical Position
4 – Over-Head Position

PIPE

1 – Movable Position
2 – Fixed Movable Vertical Pipe Position
3 – Fixed Horizontal Pipe Position
4 – Fixed 45degree Pipe Position

2G – Means Pipes Groove Fixed / Movable Vertical Position

5G – Means Pipe Groove Fixed Horizontal Pipe Position
6G – Means Pipe Groove Fixed 45 Degree Pipe Position
