The key takeaways from the document are the safety measures, techniques and procedures for welding carbon steel plates in the horizontal (2G) position.

The steps to prepare the base metal are to cut the plates to the desired dimensions, bevel the edges, clean the surfaces, and tack weld the plates together.

The welding techniques for the horizontal 2G position are to control the weld puddle and travel speed to prevent sagging, lean the electrode towards the weld area, and use multiple passes for thicker metals.

LESSON: 2 Weld carbon steel plates in horizontal position (2G)

CONTENT STANDARDS: The learner demonstrates an understanding of the basic

concepts and underlying theories in performing groove
welding on carbon steel plates.

LEARNING COMPETENCY: The learner independently performs groove welding on

carbon plates based on industry standard.

MODULE NO: 2

TITLE: Welding Carbon Steel Plates in Horizontal Position

( 2G)

What I Need to Know (Introduction/ Learning Objectives)

After reading this module, the students should be able to:

1. Prepare the base metal in welding steel plates in horizontal position (2G)
2. Demonstrate proper welding techniques in 2G position and
3. Perform skillfully in weld carbon steel plates in horizontal position

What I Know (Pretest)

MULTIPLE CHOICE. Read the statement correctly. Write the letter of your correct
answer.
1. Is a groove melted into the base metal next to the weld toe or weld root and has not been
filled in. true
a. Undercut b. incomplete fusion c. under fill d. cracks
2. If the weld does not combine with another weld or the base metal it it
referred to as:
a. incomplete penetration b. incomplete fusion c. incomplete bonding
d. incomplete inclusion
3. To determine if a welder is qualified, the welder must pass a ________________ test. a.
WPQR b. WPS c. PQR d. Code
4. Which term best describes the operation where a welder or welding operator has control of
a molten weld pool and the weld pool has a side to side motion that is transverse to the travel
direction?
a. Oscilllation b. Weaving c. Whipping d. Both a and c

5. Arc time is:

A . the time the arc is on during the arc welding operation.
b. the total time the welder is clocked into work.
c. the non-arc time.
d. the total arc and non-arc time.

Discuss the video with the students

 Base metal processes
 Make a groove to the base metal
 Dimension of the root face and the root opening
 Correct position of the plates in jig positioner
 Techniques in welding 2G position

How to Prepare the Base Plate or metal

The bevels are to be flame cut on the edges of the plate before the parts are
assembled. The bevel face must be smooth and free of notches.
The groove face and inside and outside plate surface with in 1” (25mm) of the
joint must be mechanically cleaned of slag, rust and mill scale. Cleaning must be done
with a wire brush or grinder down to bright metal.

Horizontal Welding

When welding in the 2G or 2F position it is necessary to control the weld puddle

and travel speed to produce a strong weld. The horizontal position is used widely in
agricultural sectors to make repairs.

The steps necessary to perform welds in the 2G or 2F position are:

-Secure the plate in a position for running beads in a straight line from left to
right. Use adjustable locking piers or C-clamps to secure the metal firmly.
-When performing this type of weld, the electrode and the plate sides should form
a 90º angle. Lean the electrode slightly in the direction of the weld area.
-Adjust the amperage, travel speed, and arc length to prevent the weld puddle
from running or sagging.
-Metal that is over 1/8 inch thick should be beveled prior to welding in the
horizontal position. If welding thicker metal, or metal that has been beveled, it is
necessary to make more than one weld pass to enhance the strength of the weld.

-A root, filler, and cap pass will be necessary.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
1. Root penetration not exceeding allowable tolerances specified by welding
codes/standards on; concavity, convexity, undercut, excess penetration, lack of
fusion, burn-through and cracks.
2. Weld capping/final pass not exceeding allowable tolerances specified by welding
codes/standards on; height of reinforcement, under fill, porosities, undercut, cracks
and cold laps.
3. Uniformity of bead ripples must be in accordance with welding standards.
4. Stringer or layered beads deposited in accordance with welding standards.
5. Finish weldment visually acceptable in accordance with welding standards on;
spatters, arc strikes; slag; uniformity of beads.
