Equipment:

Subject: Adding a Line Inductor to Variable Speed Oil Pump Drive

Issue Date: 05/01/02 Withdrawal Date: 05/01/03 Data Control Level: C

Issue Date:Issue
Materials Needed: Line Inductor, Mounting Hardware, 14 AWG wire
Tools Required: Drill with appropriate drill bits, wrench and screwdriver for mounting hardware
and wire attachment
Estimated Time Required: 1 Hour
Warranty: Parts and 1 hour Labor on Service Contracted Chillers
Revision Notes: N/A

Background
Over the last year we have seen a higher than expected failure rate of the variable speed oil pump drive. The root
cause of the failure is line voltage fluctuations. These fluctuations can be caused by a variety of conditions such as
the switching of power factor correction capacitors, or thunderstorms.

Units Affected
All YK chillers Style ‘D’ and some Style ‘E’ are affected. Chillers that are connected to a line voltage of 575
VAC will not need the inductor. If YORK Service has already installed the line inductor, then the problem has
been corrected. Verify the part number of the drive before ordering a line inductor. The part number of the drives
is 024-30468-001 and 024-30468-002.

Cause of Failure
The variable speed oil pump drive contains electronic parts that have a voltage rating. Generally, the voltage rating
of these parts are selected for an input voltage range. Along with the voltage range, a minimum value of line
inductance is also chosen. The transformer that supplies power to the chiller has a much lower inductance value
then the minimum value allowed. The addition of a line inductor will raise the inductance value of the input line to a
value greater then the minimum required for the variable speed oil pump drive. Drives connected to a 575 VAC
line have a step down transformer. These transformers have enough inductance to meet the required minimum
inductance.

Work on this equipment should only be done by properly trained personnel who are qualified to work on this type
of equipment. Failure to comply with this requirement could expose the worker, the equipment and the building and
its inhabitants to the risk of injury or property damage.
The instructions on this service bulletin are written assuming the individual who will perform this work is a fully
trained HVAC & R journeyman or equivalent, certified in refrigerant handling and recovery techniques, and knowl-
edgeable with regard to electrical lock out/tag out procedures. The individual performing this work should be aware
of and comply with all national, state and local safety and environmental regulations while carrying out this work.
Before attempting to work on any equipment, the individual should be thoroughly familiar with the equipment by
reading and understanding the associated service literature applicable to the equipment. If you do not have this
literature, you may obtain it by contacting a York Service Office.

Solution for Problem

For chillers covered under a service contract, the factory will provide an inductor to be installed at no charge as
part of a proactive retrofit. To minimize the cost, please try to plan this work when other work is scheduled.
On 230 VAC drives, the part number for the inductor is 025-37860-000.
On 460 VAC drives, the part number for the inductor is 025-37861-000.
Both parts are available from the Baltimore Parts Center.

Activity Date
The replacement warranty is active from 4/31/02 until 5/1/03

Installation Instructions
1. Remove power from the chiller using the main disconnect.
2. Locate where to mount the inductor. Typically the inductor can be mounted in the bottom of the enclosure.
3. Drill holes for the mounting of the inductor. Be sure to clean all metal shavings from the enclosure.
4. Mount the inductor.
5. Remove wires L1, L2, L3 from the input of the variable speed oil pump drive.
6. Remark wires L1, L2, and L3 to L1B, L2B, and L3B. Connect these wires to the inductor as shown in the
drawing above.
7. Run 3 new wires from A1 to L1, and B1 to L2, and C1to L3. Mark these wires L1-L3. Tighten thescrews on
the oil pump drive to 10 in.-lb.
8. The installation of the inductor is now complete. Power may be restored the chiller restarted.
